Been asked to connect a small cooker in a Montessori nursery, I presume this is classed as a business e.g. commercial

anyone know of any particular regs that might apply as I would imagine that this is not covered under Part P ?

I've yet to scope the job, any things I should consider aside the obvious such do the job on a Saturday when no kiddies running around

As long as it's not a residence or shares a supply (meter) with a residence then its not under Part P.

No particular regs just the standard Guidance of BS7671, and normal Health & Safety.

Whats the building like, could it possibly have 3phase supply?

If yes you need to be aware of balancing out loads across phases..

and avoid simultaneously accessible accessories fed from different phases,

such that 400v potential difference present between your cooker & socket nearby?

:)

Well just had a look, and without removing covers looks like it could be 3P so not an area I feel comfortable to work with, as my area is DI, so will likely recommend they use someone with commercial

Seems that they bought a Baby Belling with the idea that they could unplug and move it around, however they bought a 4kW 30A model :| , they asked if they could not use some sort of flexible lead & plug hmmm the only thing I could think of is this http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/GW240slash32slash3S.html, with 25A Artic but not convinced if it would even be sensible/safe considering the location, comments?

I have advised they to look at the 13A model if they needed to do this (why not ask for advice before you buy something)

Alternately they could just repair the oven they have in the kitchen, since it's likely just a blown element

the plugs you have there would most likely be suitable for environment (they are designed to take a lot more of a beating that a nurery would get!). but if you do, it might be worth installing an interlocked isolator so you can turn on power unless plug is in. i would either have it hard wired, or if they did want it on a plug, use a 32A socket/plug with 4mm

A nursery would be classed as comercial and beyond the boundaries of part p.

Regulations would depend on the local authority, and if the nursery is under the ruling of an education authority. Each would impose its own specs for the electrical installation.

However from experiance the local building authority often rely on the contractor being a member of an association, and would not accept a certificate from a DI for instance.

no harm to you, but if I thought someone like you was asking questions like this about my sons nursery then I would either have him moved(very unlikely) or be questioning the nursery's ability to contract staff with the knowledge required.

no offence intended.

None taken Steps, I know my limitations, and would put the safety of the kids ahead of anything else e.g. money, for the record I know the owner they thought they would be helping me out in tough times

I've given them the 2 options I can sleep with

1) Repair the element on the existing cooker & they buy the 13A Baby Belling for what they had planned

2) If they want to use what they have bought then I'll give them the name of a firm working in commercial

Are we happy with that Steps ? ;)

VERY, and for the record, your instance was good too, its a lot about keeping joe public informed, ie they got a cooker that wasnt for the intended purpose.
