My oven stopped heating in the middle of  cooking although fan still going.

It is an elba excellence but there is no  model number on the cooker. It is about 15 years old.

The clock, fan and thermostat are all operational.

I thought it would be the element so undid the back to get at it.

Switched the wires from the grill to the oven and the element works fine.

If i now turn the grill switch on the the oven now works and the thermostat works as I can switch the element on/off using it. I thought this would be ok for me as I never use the grill.

The fan unfortunately is linked to the oven controls and even though the oven is now operational the lack of the fan means the oven never gets warm enough. To operate the fan I have to turn the knob from grill to oven which switches the grill (now oven element) off.

Hope that makes sense.

Any suggestions as to what it could be or should I ditch the cooker as it is quite old. It is till in pristine condition.

I think that I did prove it is ok although it may be more complicated than I assume. The element heats up fine with the grill wiring linked to the oven. If I turn the thermostat temperature down the element switches off. Turn it up and the element switches back on.

There is only one thermostat control for both the grill and oven.

I thought what I did proved the thermostat was ok. If I turn the temperature control down the element switches off. Turn it up and it switches back on.

There is only on temperature control knob which controls both oven/grill.

The grill wiring goes direct from the input cable to the element. The oven wiring goes through some gadget which is probably linked to fan and clock.

Ah I didn't realise there was only one thermostat.

then it must be the selector switch that switches from grill to oven that has a burnt out contact.

Thank you ProDave for your time and contribution. Much appreciated.

I'll pull the cooker out from its position  tomorrow and see what I can deduce.

Seems like the solution may be beyond my ability. (No electrical meters etc.)

Don't want to fork out for a  callout if too expensive to justify the repair.

Quite happy to use a professional but as a retiree got too watch the pennies where possible.

if you disconnect it from the mains a simple 10quid meter may suffice to deduce what part is actually at fault.

but, its not my forte,

Prodave is much better at this sort of thing, Im sure he will keep you right.

Look for someone doing free callouts or estimates in your area. I do this locally, but not to your area....... ( and not at the moment, as I`m a smidgin busy.......)

You should be able to find out if the repair is economically viable.

Good luck.

n.b. the model plate is usually inside the oven door, on the door or surround.

yep, as KME said,

maybe try one of the NO FIX NO FEE guys,

the problem is sometimes their fix fee can be extortionate,

also KME , not all these people are as competent as yourself,

a lot of these folks simply pump their fix fees and just keep changing things til they find the fault,
