Agree with the "pilot" hole first but also maybe less than 10mm. Also as you think you are getting to the "outside", drop the hammer off. I have a cordless sds that I use for smaller holes (up to about 16mm) and the hammer is not too overpowering on that. If I need a larger hole then I (depending on location etc..) switch to a 110v drill to "finish it off"

Using a dull drill bit will increase the chances of blowing the face off a brick.

cemented at either end to stop moisture getting back in
I would avoid using cement on the inside as decorators hate rubbing it down ;)

Good luck with the assessment.

Applaud Smiley:D

Where do you get the longer drill bits from in smaller diameter? Smallest I have found is 12mm at 600mm and 1000mm.

Dewalt do some smaller ones (e.g. this 8mm 600mm long sds+ http://dewalt.co.uk/accessories/productdetails/catno/DT9535/). These are fast cutting and need minimal hammer.

Unfortunately, despite me telling them a year ago about their site being badly broken for the sds+ bits, they have yet to fix it.

Move :p . I wouldn't have thought you would "blow" the face on a stone wall so drilling small then going up would not be so necessary.
The stone does 'blow' btw!

Thanks for the links - no plans to drill any more hole through me walls but will bear it in mind :D

(not after severing the sky cable last time ;) )

Could understand it fracturing along a "fault line" but not blow in the same way a brick can but I guess it depends on water ingress and loads of other factors that may have weakened the stone.
