Well it didn't do it previously...I suspect I may have changed a setting , when tweaking the PC for speed..

It only occurs when accessing the Partion drive or external drives or when opening a program that looks at these drives...

:|
when you say partion drive, do you mean your active windows partition or c: or whatever? is your external drive a usb connection?

if you getting an error on your o/s hard drive, then as others say it could be stalling on bad sectors or something, or it could be a ****y connection (is it ide or sata?) check cable for damage etc.

if external drive is usb and your system hangs a little when accessing this then that could just be a usb sync problem with the external drive. i think windows xp presumes that the external drive is like ide or sata or something and expects it to behave like a normal hard drive, ive read somewhere that usb drives are obviously not as efficient as ide or sata etc and that they can have bugs.

you could simply be about to witness a hdrive meltdown and have a seperate slight issue with your ext drive due to usb. if your drive starts "clicking" then id back up whatever you can as quick as you can

At what level? I have worked in an awful lot of data centres over many years and we have been having this issue for 10+ years and its getting worse with newer "cheaper" disks probably due to smaller tolerances in the manufacturing processes. Ian.
? I worked for the largest trade only hard drive distributor in the UK as a product manager for 16 years (a highly technical role) if that helps

Just never heard of grease crystallizing before as a cause for drive failure, it's fair to say that SATA drives are not as reliable as SCSI but down to cost and tolerances in manufacturing techniques, Maxtor and Samsung had some serious batch issues for a number of years

As I recall spindle designs contain negligible baring lube and would not even resemble grease as most might visualise grease used on cars for example

Stiction on the other hand can be a major headache, due to the closer heights that the heads fly above the platters in each new generation of drive

Anyway way too much rocket science for Andy ;)

andy, you can come light the touch paper on my new space shuttle, just as soon as i calculate how much turf it will take to get to the moon... :D
LMAO Applaud Smiley

here ye header wit are ye usin for a heat shield.

OK then guys, I'll rephrase my question:

Why does my PC not know whats in the partition Drive or External Drives, when initially accessing it?

Why hasn't it read/indexed the information, when these are clearly set?

Have you tried having a look inside with a tiny fiberoptic camera...............

:coat

It is a minor inconvenience, the slow reading of the (afor mentioned) drives, so unless there is a setting I've got set wrong, I'll leave it as it is for the time being.

A clean install is a real pain in terms of time and effort and configuring the PC back to the way you like it..

:DB-)

Ahh,,, but often essential if only to clean it up and get it running better..

When you did your reinstall of Windows, did you FDISK and FORMAT the drive or did you just go over your existing stuff????

Well I did a clean install............................................however..

I did hit a few problems on the partitioning of drives.. :_| :(

However it doesn't explain why it is so slow in responding to external drives?

:D

Hi,

Just entertain me for a second!

So have you done a low level disc error check for bad blocks?

Before you go on to: -

Examining the grease for "crystallisation".

Rebuild.

Reduce the number of applications.

etc...........

As an electrician would you change the RCD everytime a trip occurred!

THE SYSTEM IS FREEZING FOR A REASON AND THAT'S 90% DUE TO HARDWARE FAILURE

Most of the time today's XP recovers from freezes unless the hardware fails!

Good Point there, CT.
