periodic test on a petrol station

i have been asked to do a periodic on a petrol station , i know that this could be classed as a specialised thing , just wonding if any one had any more information ?

Outside the scope of BS7671:2008 Danny, though it may give you guidance as to where to look.

internal stuff may be to 7671, but external is different. and chances are, your PLI & PII wont cover you either

most of the installation will to be explosive rated etc

bets leave it to someone who knows what they are doing

Your insurance will not normally cover you unless you have applied for special locations, explosive locations and the like. Besides BS7671, there are many other regulations relating to filling stations. I would not say it is specialised, per se, its all down to knowledge, and having the correct reference material. Do not forget the requirement to provide proof that you are conversant with, and have knowledge of, the type of installation you are working on.

I used to do them many years ago. Then NIC wanted more money, more certificates yahda yahda yahda....just wasn't worth it. There is/was a special book on it, all I can remember is that it had a pale blue cover and a pic of a petrol pump on it. ...... :coat

I done one many many moons ago, and also done a chemical store on the rock a few years back,

I had my compex(now expired ) on both occasions and according to the people I was working with that was good enough for insurance company at the time,

may be more specialised now tho.

on that subject, anyone recommend a good place to do compex for not a lot of cash, oop north.

Whenever I've done one, its been as part of a shop refit for the company which run the shop attached, rather then the oil co. - as normally they are a bit of a mess and sockets have been added left and right by handymen etc. We tell the client we do not get involved in Atex zoned areas and that the pir will not include the pumps, canopy lighting, basically anything in that area. then we'll also note the same in the extent of installation box on the PIR form.

Wouldn't mind doing a compex course and getting into that though if theres places that do it at a sensible price...

I did one a few months ago. I just tested the circuits inside, ie, the shop and storerooms etc. I omitted all circuits that fed the forecourt area, eg, the consumer unit feeding the petrol pumps- noting limitations.

I remember my dad going to the petrol station and one of his sons was in the car and got bored waiting for him to come back from paying. To relieve the boredom he pushed the cigarrete lighter in and proceeded to light various bits of paper before throwing them out of the window! Dad came back and reminded the errant son that petrol was highly flammable and there was a petrol pump right next to the car!

I work On filling stations testing this is my main line of work, The best advise I can is obtain a UKPIA card and then enroll for Compexe training Most filling stations require you to have the UKPIA (Main filling stations Total Shell BP etc) This is not the case on private sites rented from one of the main companies IE one man band operations
