Have got my first PIR in about 6 years. Twin operating theatre, recovery and plantroom. Can anyone recommend a good read to refresh my brain. Test new installations all the time but have been offered work doing quite a few PIRs.

That won`t be a "standard" EICR mate.......................

You need to speak to Manator, or maybe Sidewinder.........this will need MEiGAN compliance, too I would expect.....

Have done my MEIGAN course. Most of my work is hospitals. Have to install to HTMs and MEIGAN. Just struggling in my head to remember codes and to what extent to test. Have not kept up to date with changes (if any) not done a PIR for years. Don't want to get there and look like I don't know what I'm doing especially if there's more to come from it.

GN3 has gone missing. Leant it to my lad when he was doing his AM2. Looks like I had better invest in a new one!

if you cant remember the codes (the most bacis of all), then you are not competent at EICR's. in which case, get someone who is

Yes I would walk away from that one. This is definitely a case of a critical location where you need to be 101% certain that you know your stuff thoroughly. if there's ANY doubt, leave it for someone who has the right experience.

Completely ofay with HTMs and all that is MEIGAN. So there is nothing really to catch me out. Cannot walk away from this. The amount of work on the back of it immense. The price is equivalent to a weeks work and got a sat and sun to do it. Had the date through and it's not till November now due to theatre requirements. Just need to refresh my grey matter!

There are catch up courses available r u scam registered I know Napit do them have a look online I've plenty of time to book one of it's not till November

50% to 60% of my work is mainly inspecting and testing. MEIGAN is obviously more intense but have done all this on numerous occasions albeit on new installations. EICR or the old PIRs were a very minute part of my work and like anything if you don't do it very often then there are something's you become a bit uncertain of.

Cheers Alpha very helpful

If you are doing a theatre EICR then you will receive a test pack from the estates management team. You will have to read all previous reports and all work logs for the last year or so. You will also have to be on the register as an approved electrical contractor for NHS estates.

MEIGaN forms are very different to the EICR forms and will have to be filled in, the operating theatre may very well be IT, and that throws even more paperwork. You will also have to do an induction with the works department, the lockout kit you sign for will have at least three locks, one for you, one for your watcher and the other for the duty estates manager. You will have to sign for your rubber mat and use it at all times when in front of the board.

Earth reference bars will have to be tested individually and readings recorded in the test pack, each supply cable will have to be tested for power quality, conductance, volt drop and all percentages recorded on the forms in the test pack. This is normally done by software, if you do it by calculation you will need a degree in applied mathematics. There is an on line calculator for this available from the NHS but you will probably not have access to their tech papers.

If you install to the HTM,s and MEIGaN then you should have all this information to hand. The EICR codes are the same for any install, its just that you will probably be asked for additional test results that are not covered by BS7671.

Cheers Manator. The company I am doing the testing for is a NHS approved contractor. Their test engineer has retired. As I do loads of hospital installs for them they have asked me to do them. Have my own rubber mat which we use when testing panels. Have seen some drawings for theatres it appears there is a IPS system installed (Bender UK) backed up by UPS with a few general purpose sockets thrown in. Pretty much standard for most theatres. Previous MEIGaN test results are available including touch voltage tests etc. Have worked at the hospital before so am aware of their proceedure for inductions. Have never had the 3 padlock thing though. Will keep forum posted on how job goes. Thanks for all the advice!

What's up KME?

Think I've not made myself clear on this subject judging by people's comments. Not mentioning names but if you read comments it's obvious. Testing not a problem. Can do this in my sleep. But the only problem I have is extent of testing and assigning problems to codes. Now for some of you lets clarify this. Like I said test new installations, if I haven't done install myself I will check 100% of circuits. From what I remember on a PIR you only check 50 or 75%. Wrong or right? Also if the installation complies with say 16th edition but not 17th what code applies( if any)if people want to shout people down on here just to make themselves feel better about their own 5ww course then they shouldn't be on here. Boy to man spark thirty years next year!!

I think KME like myself was thrown by your original question, written words do not always convey true intent or meaning.

Your company should have you confirmed on the register for approval, this is in the form of written notice its not overly important unless any conflict arises.

Brandon are one of the largest MEIGaN suppliers and nearly all UK hospitals use their stuff, they also have some tech pages that you can download.

The MEIGaN testing procedures can be found on the MHRA website, I have just checked and the calculator I mentioned is on their website.

If you have a copy of the MEIGaN notes they also outline the testing required. There are no codes for the MEIGaN side of testing they are simply pass or fail.

Thanks Manator. I lost the plot slightly it all made sense to me on my original post. Been having a bad day and after reading the posts started to seeth a little. The way the posts read it sounded like people thought i couldnt test and was asking for help doing testing. This is not the case as i posted above. Apologies for going off on one. The IPS Is supplied by Bender UK however the surgeons panel, pendants , lights and canopy by Brandon. My name must be on a register somewhere. when I work in hospitals the my name and company name are put forward at start and have had

no problems for the last 10 years.

Care to elaborate then.
Anyone doing a PIR will have no access to the original design plans, and will probably have little access to any previous test results. Which is why any PIR is totally different from any initial testing and commissioning of any installation.
