A shopfitter doing domestic work got me from Yellow Pages, he insisted I go and 2nd fix today. Oh dear, Three of them in the kitchen, fitting worktops, no room to work, of 10 downlights they managed to lose the loop for one , no cable there at all, cables pulled through unit backs for plugs 1" long (25mm) .

Can't connect them!!

For some reason they have cut 75mm off the back of the base units so the intergrated washer and drier and tall freezer won't push fully back. Told me the cooker had a plug on it, no it doesn't , there till 7.00pm wiring a 30 A supply so they can have Xmas dinner. Omitted to tell me the gas hob needs a socket, fitted a wall unit round the fuseboard making it hard to access, noticed the gas meter totally boxed in , inaccessable, gas fitter coming tomorrow to connect the hob, OOOps . What a bloody cock up !

Suspect I'll have trouble getting paid too. !! X(

Sounds familiar, I used to do some kitchens for a firm like that, rip out and refit in a day, with me rewiring it in the middle somehow. Practically impossible in some cases, I gave up and left them to it, then they went bump so not all bad.

Don't you just hate it. I have to go out tomorrow to connect cooker could not do it yesterday as tiles hadn't been grouted also connect showers they had not been installed although good chance they won't be tomorrow either due to plumber not being able to get in due to weather. I am not looking forward to journey as its a nightmare place to get to up a steep hill that was shut of this morning due to abandoned cars. What we do to earn a crust.

:(

Can't you phone them first to check that the work is done by the plumber?

who wired the job Deke?if you did, and they lost your cables/cut them short, id be charging them extra for it

You're right there Andy, I won't work with them again , my regular builder is a million times better than them , having to follow ******s like them really winds me up . Also I see that the guy lives on one of the "posh" roads in an upmarket area , so must be making a good wedge.

Offered me a shop refurb with them , smack in the city centre, no way do I want that, parking and access would be a nightmare without coping with this lot.

Had to go anyway to connect cooker. Got there ok only problem was getting back the road is on a slight incline and my rear wheel drive transit doesn't like the ice, managed to get a push though so got home. Plumber said he would connect showers so left after about 2.5 hours. We have rain this evening so hopefully snow will be soon gone.

if i understand the regs correctly the plumber isn't allowed to connect/install the electric shower unless he is qualified is he? i have this issue with tenants all the time so i ended up taking a picture of the regs to show people who didn't believe me.

reg 134.1.1 states that good workmanship by competant persons or persons under their supervision must do the work and also that you must follow the manufacturers instructions, nearly all if not all items of eletrical equipements instructions say that that the item must be installed by a qualified/competant person.

not knocking anyone here just checking if i have understood this part of the regs correctly.

Its a low voltage shower so should not be a problem and only three wires even a plumber can do that.

since posing this question i have trying to find a definition of a competent person and the best i can find is one from the EAWR which is the following:-

"No person shall be engaged in any work activity where technical knowledge or experience is necessary to prevent danger or, where appropriate, injury, unless he possesses such knowledge or experience, or is under such degree of supervision as may be appropriate having regard to the nature of the work."

so Andy i completely agree with you there that you don't have to be qualified but you do have to be able to prove that you have the relevent knowledge and experience, obviously the easiest way is to have qualifications but a documented history of work *should* suffice.

From Approval Doc P pg 21:

i. The Electrical Installation Certificate required by Part 7 of BS 7671 shall be made out and signed or otherwise authenticated by a competent person or persons in respect of the design, construction, inspection and testing of the work.

ii. The Minor Works Certificate required by Part 7 of BS 7671 shall be made out and signed or otherwise authenticated by a competent person in respect of the inspection and testing of an installation.

iii. The Periodic Inspection Report required by Part 7 of BS 7671 shall be made out and signed or otherwise authenticated by a competent person in respect of the inspection and testing of an installation.

iv. Competent persons will, as appropriate to their function under (i) (ii) and (iii) above, have a sound knowledge and experience relevant to the nature of the work undertaken and to the technical standards set down in this British Standard, be fully versed in the inspection and testing procedures contained in this Standard and employ adequate testing equipment.

Not sure thats overly different tbh. Being a member of a competent persons scheme implies you are a competent person.

Ian.
