Hello to all,

Can you advise me on the following.

I need to supply power to a shed which is only 10 feet from my property.

The shed will house a tumble dryer & a light.

The CU is at the other end of the house and not easily accessible.

Can i tap into a double switch socket directly across from the shed inside the house using an RCD spur.

The socket is on the first floor and therefore a gantry option would be preferred.

I assume i need a CU in the shed.

Also which type of cable is needed ie SWA etc.

Any and all replies appreciated.

At leaset he mentioned the use of an RCD spur and SWA.

No mention of earthing arrangements mind...

On off is right... but it is a difficult to answer without more info. 

There is no easy way around this one and it is littered with cans of worms.

Photos of your meter equipment surrounding it & your fuse board would be of great use to determine the best way of earthing, you may need a small CU with a SWA extension from your main fuse board.

Extending outside is normally quite a hefty job and some of the regulations surrounding it are open to interpretation hence the oh dears and comedic replies.

Greetings "Is it meant to Burn"   What do we call you for short ?

Anyway , not sure what you mean by "Gantry "  but you could go with  catenary wire between house and shed.

Then go with either 3 core X 2.5 SWA or PVC conduit attached to the catenary, make cable off in a IP box and wire back to a sw/spur fed from nearest socket.

You only need a 10A supply so in the shed fit an RCD spur as main isolator, then socket then sw/spur with 3A fuse for light . 

Depending on your house supply cable you may need to fit an earth rod. 

Not such a big deal really..its just a sub-main from one building to another.   Your board is miles away so come off nearset socket .

Do you have electrical knowledge , are you in the trade or what?

Is this house where an external supply has to be taken from an overhead first floor socket related to your previous question? http://www.talk.electricianforum.co.uk/topic/12901-supply-to-an-outside-workshop-feeding-a-welder-compressor-lights-sockets-etc/ Just because you have located the nearest socket does not mean it is suitable to be extended. It may already be a spur off a ring. It may be a radial that cannot be extended further due to load, Max Zs, or Volt-drop limitations. Quite simply there is not enough information provided. If this is to be done correctly to comply with BS7671 & Part P, it will need appropriate design, testing and certification. Otherwise if you are ignoring these you can just go and stick any cable where you like and just see if it works.
