I know a builder who only ever has powercraft tools and swears by them

I use all makita, but only because I like to have matching green boxes in the van :Blushing

Buy cheap you buy twice (or more).
A builder I know uses erbaur stuff reckons its as good as any branded stuff but I personally mainly go for Hilti and have Makita and a few Dewalt tools but anything will die if you use it to excess.

Yes and no.

I tried a cheap cordless drill, and it was carp. It broke after about 10 months. When the warranty replacement also broke in a similar time, I got a refund.

But, I have used a cheap "no brand" mains SDS drill for 8 years of hard work now, and apart from needing the brushes replacing once, it's been fine.

they don't build them like they used too,

my old mans got a WICKES hammer action SDS drill with roto-stop had it 12 years if not longer cracking drill had some abuse and still going strong,

i bought a cordless from wickes which was shocking don't know what happened to it but it hammers of normal setting so ends up knackering screws :C

I have that one ,they are very heavy , do the job of chasing but they'll tire you in half the time.

would recommend it for the price, but definitely not for everyday use.
