i agree air cooled so no fancy dtc codes to look for only points condensor and dizzi only think you have to keep an eye on is overheating

down to low oil presure so intend to put a vdo oil gauge and rev counter in new dash board and quick shift gear stick to stop float in gear sticjk as the old vw have

moose, if my old man was alive he would probably have you burned at the stake!

He was a big VW mechanic, and (AFAIAA) he worked for their works teams and he used to restore Beetles for a hobby, he had to give up mechanicing due to ill health.

in his opinion there was only maybe 2 types you should ever 'beach buggy' , and from my childhood memories thats not one of them!

I do remember him doing a 'so-cal' back to full factory spec once and my brother completely totalled it 2 weeks later, he never ever got to drive another one of my dads beetles after that, although that was one of the last ones he ever restored. :(

i used to ride scooters yrs ago so i have a a bit off knowledge on air cooled engines

and the industrial work i do helps with the welding and fabrication things

funny looks today while i was grinding old floor out while car was upright on the drive

with sparks flying in the air

yep, for sure, thats what gave me my trade,

I wanted to be a mechanic too, but my dad said NO, I suppose in those days it was a cold dirty job (compared with some), so I became a spark,

bought a bike to get to work, but had no money to pay folks to fix it, my dad showed me how, but wouldnt actually do anything to it for me, I done it under his instruction.

BTW, even after all this time, Im still a sh17e mechanic!

Ooooooo, I went on one once, was a great little bike. I would love one of them, seen the prices they make though....

By me, there is a load of what is effectively waste ground. [about 200 acres] For years kids have ridden old bikes, let off air rifles, all manner of things. Nobody ever got hurt.

The geniuses in the local council could not have kids doing constructive things, oh no, let them take drugs, so they fenced the lot off, and the police will get the helicopter out if they think you have a bike on there. The police even bought their own enduro bikes to give chase.....

Anyway, I fancy building a little minibike, the sort of thing kids made in the school metalwork room 40 years ago [there were plans in the "sun" annual once]

I have been looking for a bantam or a villiers engine, but they are TERRIBLE money...

I think i will use a Honda 50 engine instead. Idea is to make something light enough i can lift it over the fence, and quiet enough that no-one will notice!!!! Be like being 12 again!!!

Yesterday i bought an old ten speed racer [this is why it is raining, i bought a bike] Now, as it happens, i have about 13 JAP 34cc two stroke engines [do not ask why!!!!] and I think i will fit one to the front wheel as they only weigh 11 pounds!!!

As they are fan cooled, i will mount it in an aluminium "box" with no top or bottom [so as to not interfere with cooling] This way, the constables will not notice my little engine and just think it is a bike with a carrier!!!!

Just thought it would be nice to tootle along the lanes on the thing!!!! I have a 1966 Raleigh Runabout in bits too. That will be fun, but having to wear a helmet kind of spoils it, might as well be in a car....

john...

john, I had the triumph for ages and lived beside the sea at a little place called Mablethorpe, each year we had beach races which I loved. There were loads of vintage bikes used for the races and bantams were almost favourites, but the triumph was almost bullet proof.

The picture is not my own bike, mine was a tiger cub 200, and was severely chopped for beach racing.
