Hello

I have just recently qualified but been working as an electrician for about 2 years. I have mainly worked on commercial and done a little bit of domestic. Someone has asked me to do a re-wire for them and it needs a new CU, the one in there is so old I couldn’t even open it up to see what was going on, I think it’s 1950s. I’ve done a couple of domestic re-wires before and put in new boards. The thing about this job is that it’s a pre-pay metre. The customer is happy with the pre-pay metre and wants to keep it. So can I just put a new CU in after the metre and attach the tails to it?

Is it within regs to still have a pre-pay metre?

If the metre needs to change, do I need to contact the DNO and get them to put a new one in? Or does she do that? And does it cost money? I remember at college being told that the DNO have to put a new metre in if you request one free of charge, but I’ve heard others say that in practice they don’t come out.

Also, would that metre have to go in before I start the work?

If I say yes to this job, I will be asking one of my mates to help me but before I agree, I just wanted to ask on here to get some opinions. SO many questions so I’ll just simplify it.

Ideal scenario for me and the customer: rewire happens and I put a new CU in and leave the metre as is.

Is this ok? Are pre-paid metres still allowed? I can't see why it wouldn't be and what difference it would make, but just want to be sure before I agree to anything.

Perhaps, I will just wait for the answer to that question before asking any others. Like I said, I’ve not agreed to the work yet but only because of this obstacle, other than that the job seems pretty straight forward (like they always do at first!)

Metre = 100cm.
Meter = A device for measurement.
