Wow, guys, I never expected all this help!

Firstly, the electrician was anything but cheap - his part of the £18,000 refit was £2,300. Having been reassured that his way of going around the beam is not completely unreasonable I will accept it as it is. I will take practicality and safety over how pleasing it is to the eye. My customers can gaze up at the two conduit runs over the ceiling beam and I will be the knowledgeable one explaining the reason behind it!

By the way, the conduit in the photo supplies electricity to an over door heater.

Once again, thanks to everyone for your generosity in replying to a panicking customer's query. Paul.

Well that wasn't bad ....21 posts on back entry end boxes......   it just shows how diverse opinions are within the trade.
Not bad at all, bit like my health problems, that went on for over 21 years, saw loads of "experts" had various drugs and different diagnoses, before finally finding out it was depression and ptsd, which I'm getting better from.

Thank god nobody was foolish enough to enquire of a psychiatrist what the correct procedure was for taking cables around a beam, we'd be running the debate for years. :slap

Lets be honest , you could get 10 different metods of inserting a light bulb on here sometimes ,  specially when a certain body from a certain county used to be here.
If you're talking about the person I'm thinking about I can only think of 2 ways of inserting a lightbulb, with or without Vaseline! lol

Thats the one . And The Only Way is Without!!
They are one of the only things that terrify me, I had an ex who was a nurse, you wouldn't believe the number of people that get assaulted by those things. One guy was changing his curtains, sat on the bed and a lightbulb leapt into his back passage! it took a whole surgical team over an hour to remove it!

Makes me nervous every time I see one, she said they had at least one person a week in A&E who'd been attacked by one of those marauding objects.

A big old 400W SON-T should do the trick.

Back to the op nowt wrong with the way the job was done, think I would have used inspection elbows, but if all I had was 2 stop boxes I would have used them no probs.

things can go very OT very quickly here

maybe the spiral CFL are to 'assist' fitting?

Back to op, no probs doing it the that was done, if I had inspection elbows with me I would have probably preferred to have used them, but no big deal.

Back to the OP.

I would have put a through box on the bottom of the beam and then bent two 90° bends around my knee to make it fit.

I have never, and will never use one of those. Hate the things. I'd prefer to see the solution in the OP.

Got to agree with you there. Something about inspection elbows just screams DIY to me.   Back to Back 90 would look much better.

They're lettuced too. Imagine trying to pull fish tape and loom through the pokey little inspection lid.

I did a board change couple of months back in a school. Someone a few years previous had added an extra ring circuit and had put the two legs of twin and earth through a 20mm conduit round the store room to get into the board. There were three, yes three inspection bends in the run. They must have had some fun getting it round there!. Must have built it in sections I presume...
