Wow, guys, I never expected all this help!
Firstly, the electrician was anything but cheap - his part of the £18,000 refit was £2,300. Having been reassured that his way of going around the beam is not completely unreasonable I will accept it as it is. I will take practicality and safety over how pleasing it is to the eye. My customers can gaze up at the two conduit runs over the ceiling beam and I will be the knowledgeable one explaining the reason behind it!
By the way, the conduit in the photo supplies electricity to an over door heater.
