Hi I am fairly new to the trade and am only a few month into my apprenticeship. When I started college I start to read bs7671:2008 and I have a general knowledge anyway however some of the regs I am not sure I am interpretating the right way.

Reg 701.413 protective measure: electrical seperation

My first thought when I read this chapter is that it was referring to shower and fan isolator, however that wouldn't cover everything else is the bathroom e.g. Light. So I am wondering if this means that a rcd as long as it was switch both the live and neutral conductors is what it is referring to ?

I may just be looking into this way to much, but if it helps me understand it I think it's worth asking, hope you can shed some light on this for me.

Many thanks

yes as it state you need electrical separation for a single socket-outlet however it doesn't give a example nor a definition of electrical separation ( single, double pole, a switch spur ect )

nothing to do with switches. that would include an isolator, which is a switch...

like i said, its generally from a tx with the output separate from the supply

Kieron , its one of those shaver sockets , usually an vertical twin plate  with a 2 pin  shaver socket plug on the front.

Inside is a transformer ,  you find hotel ones usually have 2 sockets, 230V   & 110V .

Most domestic ones are just a one to one transformer @ 230V  input & 230V output.   .

The primary winding is across the mains  but the secondary (output)  is an induced voltage with no connection to earth so , as in The Duck's picture you cannot get a shock between L & E  ...so safe for bathrooms .

Otherwise known as a Safety Isolating Transformer.

Welcome to the Forum .  Someone will always help you on here , don't be afraid to ask.

Hi Keiron,

Personally, i say well done you for asking...

I will tell you a little story....

Years ago, when i first started working, it was in an engineering works. The boss was a very clever, hugely talented chap, and he thought a lot of me...

He said to me one day;

"If you are not sure, ask. There is no such thing as a silly question, and, if you ask when not sure about something, only a fool would laugh. HOWEVER, if you do not ask, and then make a balls up, EVERYONE will laugh their bollocks off"

Have never forgotten that....

john...

I don't remember  ever seeing a single outlet shaver socket except when built into one of those horrible mirror lights with the tubular lamp.

Back in the day i think LOBLITE made one. Square plate with a circular rotating centre portion. You turned the centre plate with the pins of the razor lead to make contact with the innards. Also had a black fuse carrier at the top. The local scrotes used to nick the fuse carrier to gomwith their collection of broken car aerials
