That's an interesting link sarni, I am intrigued by the comment part way down the article where it says "Homeowners have been alerted to the rise in fraudulent claims via coverage in the national and regional press." Has anyone actually heard or seen this "national" coverage?

The last case I saw in the trade paper , NICEIC sued and won , mega thousands of pounds as I remember. They are very protective of their brand.
That is also my impression of their efforts to maintain their 'Brand image'. Could it be that it is easier to prove misusing a name or logo in an advert and thus win a case, rather than proving negligent work and possibly losing a case?

The last two nights in lancashire telegraph there has been an advertt about the dangers of diy electricians, last night was a full page advert from napit, and tonight just a general write up explaining that you should use registered professionals

maybe things are starting to get done

I have worked for the LABC in my area a few times and I have inspected works that have been made to be put right, however legally they will only ever prosecute if I find something dangerous.

I am sorry to say but there are enough people out there who think they are electricians because lets face it it only a few wires to a few sockets.

The fun starts when they put 32amp type b,s on a 2.5mm radial which is 50m total length.

If you have some major concerns you must report them, I know a few lads at Blackburn and Hyndburn who would have to visit the properties with you or the owner, that is the only drawback to correct channels.

Until we have a situation where no home insurance or other insurances will be given unless the properties have a valid certificate then we shall never eradicate this behaviour.

Incidentaly there is a new drive by the HSE aimed at property developers.

So I would expect random visits to any property undergoing a refurb.

Maybe they need to start using one of the strongest advertising tools....television!!!

If the government are so concerned about these issues, then they should fund a large advertising campaign on tv/radio to make members of the public aware of ALL the schemes they are able to safely rely on for competent electricians.
