Welcome to the forum, Often on this forum various members moan about the short course training providers, but I think you may be the sort of person who these courses are best aimed at. Someone with some underpinning electrical science but needing to bring it up to date with the current wiring regulations. (as compared to a postman or insurance broker wanting to become an electrician.) You need to think about what area you are interested in commercial/industrial domestic etc and if you want to join an approved contractor scheme. The various contractor schemes list their entry requirements on their websites. You will most certainly need some city and guilds qualifications up to the 17th edition. It would probably be worth your while to go and have a chat with a local college and a local short course training provider, to see what they offer, and you can compare costs and timescales to see if it suits your plans.

Doc H.

Thanks for that answer Doc.Very helpful. Was thinking about the short course route myself seeing as I do have quite a bit of knowledge already.

Any ideas on which is the best to use and which ones to avoid??

Thanks again.

private message me if you are in the London or surrounding area as you would probably look at the fast track centre I used last year. I want to do it privately as not everything I have to say is good and I believe this forum is sensibly strict about discussing companies openly

No, but they are quite big. Can I give my opinion on a company in a public thread?

If you are a qualified spark already albeit with industrial background, I would have thought 2382 (regs) and 2391 (inspection and test) would be all thats needed plus a bit of time to adjust to domestic or commercial environment.

Thanks Rev.Having looked through this and other forums for the past few weeks, I'm guessing getting the experience might be the hard part!

Looks like things have turned pretty tough in the years I've been away.

If its any help, I have similar quals (without the HNC) and served my time in heavy industry, I worked in quarrying then went into domestic - spent 3 years out of the trade, emigrated to NZ worked in dom/com/ind and came back and am back in the industrial world. Fact: its easier for an industrial spark to turn to domestic work than the other way round. ( no disrespect to domestic sparks) I would have thought that once you have the regs under your belt you could work in the domestic sector (under some guidance) you may have to work for a bit less while you get accustomed.

All the best with your endeavours. Let us know how you get on and this is a great place to ask questions.

.Hello again

I'm afraid to say that due to some issues I never acted on my initial post. I am interested in moving into the electrical maintenance(City Building) side of things. HVAC,power etc. And have made some enquiries with some recruitment firms who are keen to forward my CV.

As previously stated I do have some experience, but not sure what I would need to do to get things updated,or whether I could go in somewhat 'cold' and do some learning/updating in conjunction.

Any ideas greatly appreciated.
