Admittedly this is with fairly sandy soil right by the sea, but a lot of the time around here you can drive a 4 ft. rod fully into the ground with nothing more than pressure from the ball of the hand. In completely different soil conditions in the southwest, I never had trouble driving 8 ft. rods into the ground with fairly moderate taps.
Only times I've had problems driving rods in when it hits the concrete foundations!
