quoting wikipedia

There are two main types of hammer drill, percussion and rotary hammer. With percussion drills the chuck has a mechanism whereby the entire chuck and bit move forward and backwards on the axis of rotation, the motion is tied to the rotation of the chuck. Typically this type of drill can be used with and without the hammer action but it is not possible to use the hammer action alone as it is the rotation which causes the hammer motion. The second type uses a different type of chuck which allows the bit to move forwards and backwards independently and is usually powered pneumatically. As such this type of drill can be used in hammer-only mode which has certain advantages when dealing with very hard substances.

according to that description rotary hammer will do hammer only which is essential.

As steps said sds not the + as sds will take both types.

I would go on the drill and its features, hammer only, sds, does it come with a regular chuck if you need it to drill regular also.

i have a few, lightweight

Yes I am an apprentice but I ment for use when I am a spark ;) lol and very true you can never have enough tools lol an I have a 18v makita for simple drilling could e doing with upgrading that aswell but I could use an sds first and ok I'll keep an eye open for one :)

Thanks for all the help :)

Get an SDS drill. Forget "ordinary" hammer drills.

If you want to drill wood as well, then get a set of SDS wood drill bits, or you can get an ordinary 3 jaw chuck that plugs in like an SDS drill bit.

If you want a recommendation of a cheap, but good SDS drill, buy one like this: Direct Power BS26S3 5kg SDS Plus Drill 230V | Screwfix.com

Note I say like that, not necessarily that exact one. These are available from many places under a whole host of different brands, and usually a lot cheaper than that.

I have one, that I bought when I started self employed 9 years ago and I paid about

i got the bosch sds i think it was on offer at screwfix, like kme says 3 years warranty paid about

and if you use a 3 jaw chuck adapter on a SDS drill then don't use it on hammer:|

Like I did with mine the other week, it fell apart:O

Thankfully I managed to get it back together though:)
