Welcome to the forum. I would say now is not a good time to be setting up a new company there are plenty of sparks with no work at the moment and they have been trading for years I think its something to do with the recession.

Things ain't looking good at the moment mate. Hopefully things will have picked up next year when you start mate. Good luck anyways

Well contrary to everyone else, my outlook is not pessimistic.

Last year was my highest turnover and highest profit of my 8 years being self employed. I only ever wanted to work part time, but it's getting more like a full time job.

Perhaps you need to up sticks and move this side of the border? With the bonus of no part P to pee you off?

Actually , Peebo, its the worst possible time in living memory to start up on your own but on saying that you probably won't get a job with a firm either so nothing to lose.

On saying that we set up Complete Electrical Services in the 1980 recession and never looked back until 1994 . What the hell !!! Go for it Peebo ........................................................Per Ardua ad Astra !!!

It is a really difficult time at the moment, lots of people doing the same as you. So there is more and more sparks in a diminishing market. But good luck to you, hope it works out.

Hello Peebo...

Things are tough..

BUT................

If you read books about starting a business, (any trade or profession that you wish), many will say that a recession is a god time to start:-

1/

If you are able to start a business when times are hard.. you will generally have NO problems when times are easy!

2/

The reverse is not true!!!! the ability to start a business when times are easy offers no guarantees as to performance when times are hard!

3/

When times are hard....

poorly managed business with high overheads tend to fail....

these leave opportunities for more streamlined business with minimal overheads!

So opportunities can be there!

4/

Electrical work is a broad spectrum...

Research your chosen market place....

There is a BIG difference between commercial installation / maintenance..

compared to Domestic rewires moves and changes!

or petrol station maintenance

or Hospital / medical installations..

etc..

etc..

5/

Make sure you have enough capital to cover yourself when times are quiet!

If you assume that you will have between 3 and 6 months with NO income over a 12month period

and can financially cope with this..

then you probably got as good a chance as anyone else!

good luck M8..

let us know how it goes?
