i have been looking through a couple of my books and i cant seem to find a reg for distance from a sink to a socket, i have done a little research online and it seems there isnt one by what others are saying.

a distance of 300mm minimum came to mind when i was looking at it today but im not sure if that just a number that popped in to my head.

where i had initially planned to put it was 600mm from the edge of sink but i can still touch operate the socket with my hand in the sink.

The kitchen ring will be 2.5mm fed from 32a rcbo as its rcd protected i cant see a problem with my planned position.

Does anyone know a reg or a minimum distance?

Thank you in advanced

no reg just suitable for location ect.  I believe the 300mm is from a IET building regs guide book.

thank you for your quick replying with the information i found this:

522.3.1 A wiring system shall be selected and erected so that no damage is caused by condensation or ingress of water during installation, use and maintenance. The completed wiring system shall comply with the IP degree of protection relevant to the particular location.
NOTE: Special considerations apply to wiring systems liable to frequent splashing, immersion or submersion.

Edit:

P.s apprently its : The Electricians Guide to the Building Regulations" p61.

page 61  fig 5.2  off the iee guide to building regs  shows dimensions for socket locations within a kitchen

socket out should be 300mm from the edge of the sink

5.2.2 location of accessories in kitchens page 60

hope this helps

The 300mm "rule" is banded about and IMO should be taken an an absolute minimum as the IET book states....when you think most appliance leads are LONGER!

The NICEIC book, snags and solutions Part 2 wiring systems metions the 300mm but then goes on "ideally not less than 1000mm". FFS some kitchens aren't much bigger!

A case of common sense really but NO LESS than 300mm. When you think about it a normal 1363 socket is NOT going to have a suitable IP rating anyway for positioning that close but hey ho!

600mm sounds good to me.

Sink or Drainer ?
Fair point but I suppose the thought is you could easily knock over say a vase that's sitting on the drainer. Interestingly the diagram in the IET book shows 300mm to sink (bowl) or drainer.

What about.............inset bowls with those "ribbed" drainers routed into the solid wood worktop!

I've seen 1st time buyer properties where the kitchen is the width of the sink plus a bit each side where sockets are located.

The sink was always bonded as a requirement but alas no longer, so why is this, maybe kitchens are not so much a danger area as in previous editions of regs.

Next they will omit bathrooms and after that the regs, so everyone can join in and do a bit, oops they already do :-( :-(

I presume that bonding has been omitted because RCD's NEVER go wrong! :innocent

As I remember they don't give a ruling anymore for sockets by sinks other than the recomendation of an IP rated socket , which they admit most customer wouldn't accept .

So, up to the installers expert judgement   .
