So I think this is a non starter but would there be any benefit of including a SPD in a sub board?

Assuming you can't add one near or on the main board

Tin hat on ........

It would protect circuits connected to the sub board, so maybe if there is something sensitive/ vulnerable there?
There may be some reduced benefit to the main board circuits depending of the resistance of the wiring between.
Personally I'm dubious of any need for the things at all unless on a dodgy rural OH supply or similar.

I'm pondering running a submain from our main CU to the garage ready for a EV point and fusebox do a neat unit with SPD and EV RCBO etc

Adding a SPD at source isn't easy

and like you I'm dubious of the need for TNS / TNCS supplies
