I used their numbers on My first job, then reworked My numbers for theirs, though for some obscure bits, I would go back to Spons for the inital guide time.

Block - 4 minutes with My box sinker and square channel chisel at worst.

This is the essence of proper quoting , you need to cover the bases . There is always something waiting to catch you out .

The firm my mate worked for quoted for refurbing some flats, fairly straight forward, lot of chasing, place turned out to have internal walls built from semi and full engineering bricks !!!!! Cost them a fortune apparently.

WOW!! that would!!! those bricks are almost like chipping away at steel!! lol!!! Some of those engineering bricks can blunt grinder/chasing tool masonry cutting blades, like there's no tomorrow!!

Good or bad my house is built primarily from engineering brick!

With a few of those black cored red bricks here and there which make a real mess everywhere when you cut/drill into them, thrown in for good measure!

This is the problem we all have quoting. I did a rewire on a 30's ex council house now the fletton bricks were harder than any I have ever come across before. Job took me two days longer than I had allowed and it ruined my metabo chase cutter and vacuum cleaner because it was a really hot time of the year. So all in all it was not a profitable job but life's like that.

Yep, I've had some jobs like those described. Bricks as hard as hell.

Heh, looks like maybe using spons time factors wouldn't be such a bad idea after all :D

I think most of the old, say 50's council houses used those hard bricks. Putting in extra sockets to outside or dividing house walls was a nightmare when i re-wired my parents ex council house years back. And that was long before the SDS type drills were generally available. All done by drilling and bolster chisel ....oh and the standard 2lb or whatever, club hammer ...lol!!!

The clinker type block work partition walls were a lot softer, but still a dam sight harder than those thermo-lite things they use today...

haha...Not so happy days ...lol!!! :coffee

I was told by an old builder the internal ones were the overcooked ones that could not be used on the outside walls which would make sense I know flettons are hard but these were unbelievably hard.

Yeah, .... i know just how hard they can be, ...I remember a brand new cutting bolster chisel just bouncing off the dammed things. I had to drill the outline of the socket boxes, and even that didn't help much.

Don't know about the over cooking thing, you could be right there, like you i just know they can be like chipping at a wall of steel... lol!!!
