This is something that has been bothering me for a while. I work on several small estates - flat developements, social housing etc etc. The one thing I have never found is where the street lamps are fed from??? Would they be connected to public road street lamps, or have an independent 'landlords supply' somwhere on-site that I just haven't found yet?

Often they are fed of the passing Main I think, and a standing charge is paid to supplier/DNO

I guess that would be picked up by a management company for the estate rather than the local council too.

No point asking the management company, because they don't know - I've tried.

Streetlighting is a local council thing, so would assume is included in council tax??? This is what I suspect is going on, but wanted confirmation of standard practices if there are any? I don't normally work on new builds so I don't know what happens!

I guess it depends on if the road is handed over to the council to maintain or left as private.

Are the roads private ? What sort of columns are they , decorative type or the same as the main road . There may be a switch room somewhere you've not found yet. Or ask the council .

usually an un-metered supply from DNO. either each will have a DNO feed, or one in so many with a cable between.

streetlighting is usually installed on new estates by the contractors, but is 'adopted' by local council who take over the maintenance of it

Standard columns, can't think of anywhere on site an additional control room could be hidden as I've been in all the leccy cupboards over the last 2 years.

i would go ahead and change the lamps. as long as you get paid....

also look on the column to see if there is any tape around it high up. often used by council to mark which has the DNO feed and which is council cable fed (makes fault finding much easier)
