Hey all,

Just got a job of wiring the feed for a sunbed in a hair salon and need some information.

It's a TNCS system.

The CU is on the 1st floor and the sunbed is going to be on the 2nd. The route for the cables is going to be around 25/30 metres away. (Akward route taken as the guy doesnt want damageto his new salon)

Sunbed spec: 230/240v 50Hz single phase booths ratings are 48Amps (180watt ballast)

So from this information provided I am planning on running 25mm Tails from the emmory block and a 16mm Earth from the 1st floor to the 2nd (25/30 run)

And then running the tails into a small CU protected by a 63 AMP Type C Breaker, Protected by a 100 amp rcd.

From the breaker I am then planning on running a 3metre length of 10mm twin and earth into a 63Amp, 4 pole switch(for isolation purposes of the sunbed) and then from the swith to the bed.

My reasons for the 25mm tails are for Voltage drop and the guy said at some stage he may want to add another sunbed.

The existing supply is protected by 100Amp Fuse.

Any information would be appreciated. ; \

maybe a 50A MCB instead? check manufacturers instructions

are you sure its 100A? it might be 80 or even 60A fuse - if it is lower value, might not give much spare capacity. and thats before a 2nd is added!

It is 100Amp for sure.

theres already 2 cu in this building may I add and no spare ways on either.

Manufacture reccomends 63Amp breaker..

As its an existing salon I would guess the existing system is already high on demand with probably instant water heaters, hair driers, kettles, tongs and so on. I think 2 sun beds of that size would be pushing it on a single phase 100A supply, you may want to do a full calc with diversity etc before you quote etc.

I've done one of these in a gym before and they had the luxury of 3 phase. Has the salon got 3 phase ?

Also I

I would also query using a "4 pole" switch????

I will admit to being a litttle apprehensive. That`s a fair job, yet you need to know what a clamp meter does? That spooks me a little. No offence intended.

if it is 3 phase, then they could install 3 phase meter and your just about sorted. but you would prob have to change DB's to 3 phase to balance loads

pic would be useful, but wont be a definate 'thats 3 phase',

I had a guy asking for supplies for 2 stand up sun showers in a little shop, I think they were about 55A ea + they wanted to run a nail bar and a load of other stuff.

I told nem no way as just running them and other bits and pieces was way over the service fuse capacity... could you imagine both of them starting at the same time....

I think darkness would have soon fell.

Got them to have a lay down instead of one of the stand up's in the end

I was planning on taking a feed and a Neutral from the henley block (Existing henley block used as the tails have been split for two cu's) and then routing through the building to my new CU protected my 63amp mcb and rcd..The supply looks like It was once 3 phase but converted back to single phase.

Forgive me if I sound green!

Theres 3 fuses all sealed but fuse 1 - Live, fuse 2 - Neutral ,and it looks like the 3rd fuse which is sealed isnt been used! Looks more like earths are comong out - there all black and a very small SCA.

I should really take a picture!

But the existing consumer units are single phase boards...
Fuse in the neutral?????

don't think so

I would certainly want to know what the existing demand is before sticking more on the installation.

beauty salons can tend to eat electricity like its going out of fashion!

busy times... loadsa stuff on...

jump in the sun beds as well..

pop bang dark! :(
