When you register for iplayer you have to give a postcode, email address and a date of birth but not much else

Register? Just click 'I'll do it later'.

They do all this, and make it almost impossible to simply watch a programme on catch up legally. I don't use Flash, haven;t for many years, so 4OD is out of the question for me. Simple enough to just grab an illegal stream though.

Unfortunately you can't do that any more.  When you register they don't seem to take any details which identify you though, and there doesn't seem to be any requirement to enter your details accurately.  I don't think you even have to verify your email address, not that there's anything stopping you from using a masked email address.

Some restrictions are as a result or your isp, I have had sites that I cannot access on my laptop, virgin media, yet I can access them on my mobile(02). it sometimes comes up " your service provider has blocked access to this website". Apparently a lot of it was to do with stopping people watching illegal streams.

Its not really anything to do with the BBC other than it is a mega tax similar to  Motor Vehicle Road tax  .

It puts billions into the exchequer's purse and a relatively small amount is used to fund the BBC  @ around 0.40p  / day .

Speaking for myself  I appreciate it because it means there are at least  three TV channels free of  mind controlling  adverts  plus local radio , BBC4 , BBC 5 , BBC 4xtra.

Compared to Sky & Virgin  it seems a bargain.  :innocent

Rapidly signing off before the flack starts flying  :coat

I understand why the BBC is appreciated by people, just for me I dont watch it so why should I be paying for it? If it wasn't for Mrs Duck & her dramas then I would be free from paying some ginger ****  £2.2m / year!

Ah ha ............ the BBC licence fee isn't just spent on the main channels on the TV and radio ........ it funds countless local radio stations and countless foreign translations of their website.............

We were in Florida recently - talk about awful american TV - the only channel we watched was BBC Worldwide - which had adverts and was screening programs such as Star Trek!

Thing is you don't need to watch TV everything you could possibly want is on the internet!

Again they probably maintain their infrastructure from the TV licence, but they also make loads from selling shows like top gear and selling formats like the weakest link so they have fingers in both Tony Cable pies  and we could probably pay less to maintain their lifestyles.

Don't listen to BBC radio either.. ..

Just pirate stations...☠
