Good evening to all ..

Lplate here, I want to address this to all of you , which I am positive that I am in the right place to ask this question..

to start with, my present status at the moment as you all knew that i am still an Lplate holder , I am now on my 2 year in electrotechnical 2330, the course is 3 years , 1 day a week . at the moment I am doing my work experience in engineering department of the hospital where i am working as a cook , I am doing my work experience to support my NVQ , though this is an unpaid work experience , really i am doing 16 hours a week to engineering dept for free , but i think in return is i can gain some knowledge..

My question is ..

Would I become an electrician as soon as i finish my 3 year course ? if not what more qualification do i need to take to become a sparky..

the department where i have my work experience is more on maintenance side , I even ask those guys ( some of my mentor ) and they said they are not allowed to do any domestic job because they are not qualified ??? ( this things confused me because one of my mentor works in there for 26 years, and my head goes to WHAT ??? ) I think in the future i want to work both maintenance and domestic job , in this case ,

What qualification I need to obtain work both maintenance and domestic area...

once again I am very thankful because I know that you guys is always there to share your knowledge ... I O U a

It used to be , some years ago, if you gained C&Gs Installation A or B you would be an electrician although you may not have any practical skills . A mate of mine attained a HNC in Mechanical Engineering , part of which included the equivalent of C&Gs B Thing was he had no idea about electrics whatsoever, just did as pure maths.

Your maintenance guys are probably highly skilled but as of a few years back domestic work comes under Part P. of the Building regs.

Part P realisticaly threw a spanner in the works.

Most qualified electricians who had been in the trade for years found that if they did not register for part p could no longer do the work in domestic properties.

In years gone by all qualified sparks had JIB cards, this was graded to your relevant skills.Providing that you carried out a recognised apprenticeship.

I know some sparks who will never sign up for part p, because the requirement levels for part p are so far below their actual training and experiance.

I heard a story not long back where a domestic installer tried to PIR a factory, which had a incomming supply of 250amps, with a 240 volt tester.

Knowledge is power, and ability is learned.

I started out as a HNC candidate but gave up because I was always more interested in hands on, and calculations did my weary head in.
