this is an interesting thread but i think I missed something at the beginning;

one probe to incoming and one to outgoing?

On my tester there are three probes and I am a bit confused as to which one I should leave dangling down my leg?

sorry to seem obtuse but when I test at a cieling rose I connect L toL N to N E to E

If someone could just explain EXACTLY what connects where it would perhaps enlighten me.

live probe on incoming, earth prob on outgoing MCB. neutral on incoming neutral (where req'd)

thanks Andy that would make sense; it's better tomake sure if you're doing scary stuff.

By the way WB steps , we missed you when you were gone.

my tester is a Robin Kmp 4120DL:Y

thanks musicsparks,

andy has it down,

the neutral as I understand it is only to balance the load out so you could put it on the earth too if you wished.

I think it takes a minute to get your head around what you're actually doing, that's the 'scary' bit, once you've 'got it', it's ok.Like I said, our lecturer didn't like the idea
he may have changed his mind once he thought about it more?

I have various shorting plugs mostly used for fault finding - frequently forget to unplug before energising, doesn't really cause a problem but does make loud bang at MCB!!
