The only thing you can do Deke, is tear off a branch of a nearby tree and threaten the afoirementioned vehicle with a damn good thrashing if it doesnt comply with your wishes to actually start and run.

It is suitable Oswald, I can see how it makes sense but as I said in an earlier post , I've declared myself semi retired now , (theres little work about anyway ) 98% of my commercial / industrial customers have either gone bust or packed up so in a good week I do a couple of board changes . In a bad week I do sod all.

Van is old by some standards , but welded up at this years MOT, 5 good tyres, brand new battery , 40MPG , racked out with storage bins . I wanted to do another two years working 2-3 days per week , avoiding kneeling jobs if poss. before chucking it in and moving to my chalet on the South Sea Island beach where all the other retired sparks are , pottering about in their luxury motor launches in the calm, clear blue seas , sipping pints of mild through a straw and hob nobbing with the Beckhams and the Bransons who like hanging out with millionairs .

When you say "new" I've never bought a "new" new vehicle in my life TBH , Just can't be arsed to change it , unless its needs loadsamoney spending of course.

Interesting Oswald, but I'd have additional hire charges to pay which I don't have at the moment. Yes I'd get the VAT back but at present I have fixed outgoings of Road Tax + Insurance + MOT =

I feel for you Deke always differcult when things are slowing down. Like you my van is ex bt i have twin wheel transit had it for 9 years has only let me down a couple of times in that time. She is getting a bit rusty now so i am hopefully going to change her in the next few months. Bt only sell them through auctions these days which puts me off a bit they do have one in Birmingham maybe worth a look for you to see what they sell for after all if you can't get to work its no good although hopefully your get it fixed.

Thanks Batts, I noticed that the one local 2nd hand BT Van dealer had disapeared , I didn't know it was all auction now.

There used to be a dealer on a local industrial estate , I'll turn in there and see if he's still trading, you never know.

Pop into the auction that way you cut out the middle man will see if i can find the address for the Birmingham one.

Rightr its BCA British car auctions they have one on the 23rd of this month plenty of vans transit connects vauhall corsas and combos.

Deke will get a bidding number,

He is VAT reg,

and TBH, as long as you get a decent guy/gal on the desk you wont have a problem, its just Joe Public they want to keep out,

go a week or so before the auction, then again a few days prior, check out the stock, and get your bidding card sorted then.

Well Thunderbird 2 was back from my local garage , covered 100 miles without problem . For those interested in such things , they dropped the fuel tank to check for damaged fuel lines, all OK . They noticed grease had run from the seal of the fuel filter , I had fitted this and wiped grease around the rubber seal as recomended . Garage reckon the heat of engine ,melts the grease , leaves a gap for air to enter , upsets the fuel injection .

Stripped and refitted it and , touch wood , is looking good.

Deke,

I have fitted spin on filter cartridges that work on pressures and vacuums much greater than those seen on most cards (faulty Mini's with common rail injection developing 600 bar at the rail excluded, long story!) these have had square/rectangular and round section seals and I have never had an issue with them leaking having applied a hydrocarbon based grease lubricant to the seal, as long as the seal was of a compatible material.

These filters operated with a temperature span of more than that seen in the engine bay of a "car".

I genuinely hope that things are cured, but the science and engineering of their solution does not add up.

Dry fitted seals, difficult on an oil filter due to the nature of the beast often effectively spall.

Soft seals seal by pressure deformation, accompanied by the mechanical deformation generated by the meting face compression.

Sorry can't go on with all this mechanical stuff have to get into Amd 1 mode for the morning!

Now surge protection anyone?...

Get the link?... :^O :tongue in cheekROTFWL:coat

We are all keeping are fingers crossed for you Deke.
Indeed we are Deke. Intermittent problems are a real pain IMHO, I would rather something just seized up, blew up, fell off or died completely, rather than working for a bit then stopping again. I guess the only consolation is with work quiet, hopefully you haven't actually lost too many jobs you could have been doing while the van has been off the road.

Doc H.
