Hi,

was round my pals house yesterday and he told me his toaster was tripping the rcd and cutting whole house out (16th Ed board)

toaster does 4 slices at once and only one side is tripping out but only after about twenty seconds of being on.

I want to test the toaster so if I do ir test will the results be fine as the element may only be leaking when it's heAted up so much.

I know your gonna say throw it away but I wAnt to learn so how do I test it?

Simple question for you pro's

cheers

insulation resistance test between live to earth and neutral to earth on the plug top or take plug off if easier to work with, it should be down to earth on either or both conductor, dont do live to neutral as there will be a resisitance present due to the element, and will give you a false reading, think of it like a heating element in a hot water cylinder.

Make a simple drawing of the circuit you are testing and put your test reading on it.

This will help to visualise the fault

Sometimes heater elements only show an earth fault when they are hot after running for a short while. This can happen with any heating element (and sometimes motors) but is particularly true of the tubular type such as immersions, irons, wash machines etc.

Test the toaster cold and there'll probably be nowt wrong. Then run the toaster till it trips the RCD. At this point you need to be ready with your tester on and test locked on. Whip the plug out and apply your tester and you'll see the fault, which will then disappear again as the toaster cools down.

i found a faulty fridge this way recently. Had me puzzled for a while.

Clear the crumbs out and it'll be fine. I've had this loads of times. Burnt toast = carbon = conductive. so if you get a piece stuck between element and earthed metal it will allow current to flow (currant if its a tea cake ;) ) 99% of the time a toaster is the cause of a trip its bread stuck in it.

or a family of mice,

went to a 5star hotel once and found 3 mice fried in the bottom of their big commercial toaster,
