I once got a £50 tip for fixing a fault (hilariously, caused by a lettuced faulty lamp the owner had bought from an antiques shop that very day, but neglected to tell me until I'd unplugged half the house!) 5 minutes or so before a dinner party started. That night we all had a 'dinner party' from the takeaway on the way home with the money!

The best one I ever had was a guy who was adamant that nothing had been touched on his electrics, this fault had mysteriously appeared! Despite there  being clear evidence that someone had messed with the wiring, i.e half the downstairs had new brass sockets and switches, well this guy was not prepared to admit he'd done anything at all. So after asking for about the 3rd or 4th time I tried a different tack, " look mate it doesn't matter to me who's done what, it's just that you're paying 35 quid an hour for me being here and at this rate I can see me being here all day", suddenly he pointed to a switch which, " I've never touched it but always been suspicious of". Guess what? It was one of the new brass ones and the wiring was totally screwed up, funny how he led me to the fault when he was looking at a large bill.
