Hey, i'm hoping for some advice from someone who might know whats going on and how i could make it better.

Our house we live in is not properly earthed and will be getting done sometime next year, and i have noticed little problems because of it but nothing major...

When using the treadmill in the spare room there is static build up when i touch the heart beat monitor sensors but it disappears after touching it....

But the problem i come today with is that i use one socket for a lot of appliances via a 10 plug surge protector.

LCD TV

PC

Xbox

External Speakers

Fan

Air Purifier

Mobile Charger..

And all the problems show through the LCD TV, if i turn the fan on and off the TV will go black screen for a second then come back on and this has been happening for a long time and wasn't a big issue for me.

Just recently the TV has been making a static click sound with occasional line on the screen accompanying it and screen blacking out... i thought it was pc that was the problem as i connect my pc through the tv as a monitor.

But today i decided to play some xbox while my PC was running maintenence scans and other things and as soon as i turned the LCD to the XBOX HDMI Port and turned the XBOX on the TV started making click noises, static lines and turning black screen every few seconds..

So it seems the more things turned on causes the issue.... as right now i have the PC,LCD and speakers only plugged in and i have had no more black screen issues..

IS there anything i can do to eliminate this problem ? split the plugs between more surge protectors or ?

+2 to above.

Even if you are planning a full rewire later on, get the earth sorted NOW. Even if it's a temporary job, it needs sorting NOW.

Why do you assume it is not earthed properly??

Has it actually been tested...

or is it because you have this "static" problem..??

SOMETIME NEXT YEAR!!!??? :shakehead   headbang

If it is NOT safely earthed then you either need your supplier to repair their bit first..

(if they have provided an earth)

Or get your own electrician to install correct earth before you even think about anything else...

Don't forget that static can build up due to the clothes you are wearing or the type of floor covering or shoes you are wearing  etc.. etc...

Static may have nothing to do with how good or bad the earth is...

In fact a good earth providing a reliable discharge point could actual result in greater static sparks than a poor earth...

How long have you thought the earth was not right ???

who was the last person to work on the electrical instaltion...?

If the earth was poor they should have fixed that BEFORE doing their work!

The Council had told us a a month or two back that the house needs rewired as the previous tenants that were old never let the council in.... and the old man liked to do all his own repairs, wiring, plumbing etc.. but it aint booked until sometime next year.

If i turn a fan on, the TV turns off.

so its a council property? ask for a copy of the installation report. if there are any C1 or C2 then they should have been rectified, which would include dodgy earthing. if it hasnt been done, and there isnt an earth, then complain that the wiring is not in a safe condition

All the symptoms you describe are likely caused by your poor earthing. It's a serious problem so get it sorted out ASAP....whatever it takes.... I'd even report the shocks you're getting from your treadmill in a dramatic way to try speed things along.

"turn fan on, tv turns off"

Doesn't sound like poor earthing, sounds like a high impedance supply and the voltage is dipping.

Could be any number of things, poor supply impedance, poor wiring, loose connections etc etc.

it NEEDS properly investigating and testing.

And if it IS a rental property, TELL your landlord it needs fixing NOW.

Of course if you have bought the house then it's up to you how long you live in a dangerous house. but renting the landlord has a responsibility to ensure it is SAFE.

You know what I had one like this today...

Its a small workshop/garage and when the light was turned on the sockets turned off.... There's only 2 circuits.. A 32A RCBO protected socket ring and a 6A MCB protected lighting circuit

I eventually found that the neutral bar was the wrong side of the isolator cage

I'm guessing the TV isn't actually turning off, it's possibly just a blank screen due to spike or noise or maybe a rise in the N-E voltage. Our LED TV does the same thing every now and then when the borehole pump starts and stops, the screen goes blank for a few seconds then the picture comes back with the OSD telling you what channel you're on..

phrases to throw at the council:-

1/ Duty of Care

2/ I got a belt of the electrics

3/ are the electrics safe for me to use

and I'm sure the regulars can think of a few more...

I would hassle the council to at least come out and test the premises

Look, OP if this is a Council (Social Housing) Property and they have admitted that the earthing is inadequate then they are committing a criminal offence, and you are entitled to get this rectified immediately, if not sooner.

IF there is no earth then a fault could easily kill someone in your house, you need to get this sorted, NOW.

Once this is done, then you can look at the minor issues of the TV screen going off, if it still happens.

From the information you have posted, your house is dangerous, and potentially lethal, so your landlord is committing a criminal offence, and the someone could DIE as a result.

PLEASE get this earthing issue sorted, if it is as you describe here.

guess who that might be.......

kick up big time shite until the dozy barstewards listen, if you have enough cash, commission your own inspection to beat council over the head with.

It may be embarrassing when we discover things were tested and the lights need re-wiring because they lack an earth or something equally benign.

It's the sort of thing a person with little electrical knowledge could get hung up on, but could reasonable be fixed next year if all fittings double insulated.

10 way adaptor sounds awful idea. I have a similar one that I use for various 12V chargers, but would never expect to use all 10 ways at once.

The first thing to do is throw it away and get a couple of new 4 way ones of a reputable make. I suspect that either the socket is been overloaded or the extension lead is faulty.

what concerns me here apache is the fact that most social housing was built 1960s / 1970s, the previous occupier liked DIY and according to the OP wouldn't let council in to do any works. 90% of council properties I've ever worked in have faults, mostly caused by DiY, or just sheer age, so there is a good chance that the electrics are dangerous. However, nylon carpets, lycra, and general cheap multi gang socket could well be to blame, but it does sound worse than that...when things start blacking out / restarting, then it suggests electrical overloading / loose connections / knackered socket / something else that is a potential fire hazard?

Councils dont seem too big on conducting inspections on change of occupant..or doing anything useful in general really...down my street at the moment they are using the grass verge as a skip think i'll pop out and trip over it later ;) ; )
