TOOLS EXPLAINED

PILLAR DRILL : A tall upright machine useful for suddenly snatching flat metal bar out of your hands so that it smacks you in the chest and flings your beer across the room, denting the freshly-painted project which you had carefully set in the corner where nothing could get to it.

WIRE WHEEL : Cleans paint off bolts and then throws them somewhere under the workbench with the speed of light. Also removes fingerprints and hard-earned calluses from fingers in about the time it takes you to say, 'Oh sh*t'

PLIERS : Used to round off bolt heads. Sometimes used in the creation of blood-blisters.

BELT SANDER : An electric sanding tool commonly used to convert minor touch-up jobs into major refinishing jobs.

HACKSAW : One of a family of cutting tools built on the Ouija board principle... It transforms human energy into a crooked, unpredictable motion, and the more you attempt to influence its course, the more dismal your future becomes.

MOLE GRIPS : Generally used after pliers to completely round off bolt heads. If nothing else is available, they can also be used to transfer intense welding heat to the palm of your hand.

OXYACETYLENE TORCH : Used almost entirely for setting on fire various flammable objects in your workshop.

BAND SAW : A large stationary power saw primarily used by most people to cut good metal sheet into smaller pieces that more easily fit into the bin after you cut on the inside of the line instead of the outside edge.

PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER : Normally used to stab the vacuum seals under lids or for opening old-style paper-and-tin oil cans and splashing oil on your shirt; but can also be used, as the name implies, to butcher Phillips screw heads.

STRAIGHT SCREWDRIVER : A tool for opening paint cans. Sometimes used to convert common slotted screws into non-removable screws and butchering your palms.

PRY BAR: See Screwdriver

HAMMER : Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent to the object we are trying to hit.

STANLEY KNIFE : Used to open and slice through the contents of parcels delivered to your front door; works particularly well on contents such as seats, vinyl records, liquids in plastic bottles and rubber or plastic parts. Especially useful for slicing work clothes, but only while in use.

ADJUSTABLE SPANNER aka "Another hammer", aka "the Swedish Nut Lathe", aka "Crescent Wrench". Commonly used as one size fits all, usually results in rounding off nut heads before the use of pliers. Will randomly adjust size between bolts, resulting in injury ,swearing and multiple threats to any inanimate objects within the immediate vicinity.

******* TOOL : Any handy tool that you grab and throw across the garage while yelling ******* at the top of your voice . It is also, most often, the next tool that you will need.

Absolutly love it!!
Been there , got the scars to prove!! No dought will be there again!!😂😂

Under ******* tools should also be those cheap automotive crimper with wire strippers and bolt cutters that as you cut a bolt slide either side of your finger and leave a nice deep cut at different diameters to cut cable.

I wonder if my pair is still by the side of the runway in the grass at bae where they landed after screaming b@stard ?

On the subject of tools, is there any good use for side cutters apart from trimming plastic cable ties! Had to use em at college to fk up cable stripping!!

my pet hate has always been pliers with the flat bit on the handle side of the hinge that's great for catching a bit of finger skin in leaving very nice blood blisters.
Like the tin snips who's handles close together at the very end; they take a chunk out of the palm of your hand if held wrong.

Round off phillips, poxy pozi or snap off modulo, aaarrrrgh!! More bastads!!

It reminds me of some of the very cruel initiation regimes offshore for new people.

On one of the vessels we launched the ROV via a moonpool in side the vessel (much better than being out on deck). The new recruits would be asked to top up the moonpool with hose to bring the level up nearer the top. One poor unfortunate did that for a whole 12 hour shift.
The next one was to go round recharging the Illuminous emergency exit signs with a torch.
The last one was calibrating the sonar with the ROV on deck, the candidate was required to be wrapped in tin foil parading around holding his arms out on command with metal trays etc, all rubbish sonar doesn't work until you're under water. The worst of it is, all of it gets filed in HD from the ROV cameras and the feature distributed amongst colleagues LOL
