hey people,how are you? briefly,i am a time served plastic injection toolmaker and am constantly under threat of redundancy,so i'm seriously thinking about a change of career,but i need a bit of advice and guidance from the experts, namely you.

firstly,i was thinking about domestic installation and testing only,could you tell me what quals i would need and are the intensive courses any good?

Hello Derek,

Welcome to the forum.

I personally, would recommend doing it the longer way around and do the full courses.

My college does the C&G 2330 levels 2 & 3 over two years, Part Time - on a Monday and Wednesday Evenings (17:30 - 20:30 Hrs). (I am coming to the end of my level 3).

I have done the C&G 2382-100 (17th Edition Regulations)

I am hoping to go back in September to do the Intro testing one C&G 2392.

And then onto the C&G 2391 (The big 'un).

They also work out a lot cheaper doing them through college.

thanks for that admin,what do you think about getting the basic domestic installation and testing, and then doing 2330 at my leisure?

Thats what i am going to do-as long as I can keep my head above water even doing a bit of handyman on top of domestic-i cant see any harm in it.

if you need a job and are finding it hard-but are only likely to be a ble to be self employed working for yourself with those quals.

argh - I wrote a nice long reply then lost it!

The gist was - it's all well and good rushing out, spending large sums of cash and being 'fully qualified' but severely lacking in practical experience.

If you rush out once you have the qualifications but lack the real world experience you risk ending up with egg on your face and doing irreputable harm to your reputation. A satisfied customer will tell a few people a dissatisfied customer will tell everyone if you mess up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just my thoughts.........

(would you want a fully 'qualified' doctor green out of med school operating on your children? - I wouldn't!)

iv just completed a six month fast track 2330 course would not recomend it at all, would definately go and do the 2 year college route if i had to do it again, its far to rushed and a lot of imporatant stuff was rushed, plus with the way things are at the moment would it not be better to be in colleg while things pick up?

Even if you do go on a know it all in 2 week course, be part P reg'd etc.... i can guarantee you will not have anywhere near enough experience to do only testing.

Anything short of a full apprennticeship, or the long way like Admin and others are doing, is just a bodge and you will not know enough to do the job without killing someone

Hi Derek

We are living in uncertain times what with the work situation as it is and I fully understand you wanting to add another string to your bow . My point is have you looked at the latest BS 7671 regs book ? You have to understand a great deal in order to do any installation and to test to BS7671 , which I don't think an intensive course could give you enough training or experience . Like Admin I am nearing the end of my C&G 2330 lvl 3 and I know that it is a lot to take in. As for C&G 2391 I know a few time served sparks that have failed the exams because it is tough, I'm sure there will be members on this forum that will agree with this . Whatever you decide to do I hope I have given you some insight to what to expect and have not put you off as there are plenty of good people with sound advice on this forum to help you
