We did a consumer change last week, TNS, remove the ubiquitous ( word of the day) wooden Wylex 6 way and fit a Crabtree Double Split load. Switch back on , RCDs flying out all over the place. Gnd flr ring, radial to wall htr in bathroom, PIR flood plugged into socket and gnd floor lights all seemed to be the problem. Unplug Telecom power source- ring stays on, unplug flood- radial stays on, switch off spur to wall htr- every thing stays on.

RCDs tested out OK.

Put them all back in one at a time , RCDs stay on , no problem ? We didn't actually do anything. My m8 muttering about RCD coils saturated or " they have to settle down" Mmmmm. Can't see it myself , any ideas ??

Did you do a global neutral - earth insulation test before removing old board.

If so what was the reading?

I'm not familiar with a global-neutral earth test ! ?:| What is it ? Individual readings were OK.Deke
rather than tets each circuit individually, test between neutral and earth bars. If this comes back OK, then obviously every circuit must be OK. if reading is low, then test individually

same can also be done L-N and L-E

Ah right I know you mean now, never heard it called "global", we'd ripped the old one off the wall before thinking about any tests, it being Saturday we didn't really want to be there !!

HI Evans electric (deke)

Sorry for not getting back to you with def of Global test, but i see others have.

I know its a pain but we always do a quick neutral earth bar test before actually removing old board to make sure new one with rcd's will actually stay in.

Also for future reference have now tested 5 circuits recently which came back at 0.19M/ohm and on all 5 circuits it was a surge protection extension lead on computer giving this low reading.

personally if both rcd's have stayed in for over a week, i wouldnt bother about it. ( well not till they phone you anyway).

Oh to clarify,

customers had unplugged pc from extension but because it was behind a cupboard they didnt unplug the extension itself. (little voices in head whispering something about

in-accessibility somethin and summet......)

I'm working on a house with a similar issue at the moment, whereby RCD trips if all connected MCBs are 'ON' when RCD is switched 'ON', but will happily stay on if MCBs are energised one at a time. I put it down to initial power surge combined with dodgy DIY which I'm still trying to trace.

Thats an interesting one Binks, thats what we were doing !!
