Need help please, I'm a real thicko!

i have installed 2 down lights under the stairs and want to wire them up to a twin switch or double switch or whatever you call it. In the twin switch the left one controls a kitchen light. A BLACK cable goes into COM and the red one into L1. That works the light fine. The RIGHT switch WAS connected Yellow to COM, and brown and blue to L1 and L2 respectively. Ive disconnected these as they didn't seem to control anything. This is where I want to connect my down lights.

The down lights have a brown, a blue and an earth. How do I connect these up to control the down lights from this spare switch please?

It might not be possible to do what you want, and even if it is, you will need more information and some test equipment.

To work, a light needs a supply, a switch, and the light all to be connected in series.  there are many ways to do this, the most common being "loop at switch", "loop at light" or "loop a a junction box (spider method)"

It sounds like you have loop at light or spider method. Now if that is the case, then you only have L and switched L at the switch, you don't have a neutral connection.  The right hand switch sounds like it was once doing 2 way switching of another light that may have been disconnected.

If I am right, then you can't just connect your new light to the switch and get it to work, because you won't have a neutral connection.

Unless you have any test equipment, and know how to use it, this is probably beyond solving on a forum and it might just be best to get a local electrician to sort it out.

just to add, when I say "may not be possible" I mean may not be possible without some additional work or an extra cable fitting. I am sure there will be a way to get your lights working.
