Hi

I am not an electrician and would like to ask the community a question regarding a recently purchased from from the United States.

I purchased a uSqueez leg massager from the USA:

brookstone com/osim-usqueez-app-controlled-foot-calf-massager

When returning to the UK, it was plugged via a standard adaptor you can buy (why it would let you do this I really don't know) and when doing so, it work for 3 seconds then a popping sound occurred.  I then realised that I needed a step down converter form the USA 110v to the UK 230v.  the product was expensive at $299 and it cannot be returned to the USA as it is not covered under warantee.

Does this mean the product is totally useless now or is there a way I can fix this?  Not sure if there may be an internal fuse box I could replace, or request a part from the manufacturer and get an electrician to replace?  I really hope a fix is available and any recommneded electicians would be most grateful.

Any help would be greatly received.

If you heard a popping sound it is quite probable that something inside is fried!!

you cannot normally hear fuses blowing they just disconnect the power silently...

some products have switches on the back for dual voltage operations

e.g.you can select 110/230v...

which is why some only need a simple adapter to accommodate a different plug type to work at different voltage..

Otherwise you should always double check the manufactures voltage label before applying power to anything when  not in the original country of intended use.

Has the massager got any visible screws that would make an internal inspection possible?

or is it one of these plastic welded and encapsulated items that they intend to be maintenance free???

Can only suggest you drop into an appliance repair shop/centre  , even a Black & Decker/  Bosch type repair centre may take a look .  Or look online , they may have a UK repair centre ,

But be prepared for bad news .  :(

Looking at the spec. I can see / find - I think summat has fried rather significantly.

As suggested - take it to a repair shop, or call someone from yellow pages - but I think a repair (if possible) may be prohibitively expensive!

I've used Industrial Electronic Repairs Ltd to fix up some rather expensive lighting ballasts before.

Sounds like your circuit board or power supply may have gone pop. They may be able to help, although they won't be cheap.

Where are you in Scotland?
Hi roys.  I am in Edinburgh.  Still looking for solutions or who I can take it to look at.  Seems to be a lot of mixed comments.

Hi roys.  I am based in Edinburgh.  Still not found a solution.  Would be good to know where I could take it for somebody to look at.  Seems to be a lot of mixed comments on the forum.

Well I'm about 25 miles away from you in Falkirk, if you are passing by.  I will give it a quick look at FOC and pass opinion on how knacked it is, no promises at all on the outcome.
