Hello all, I hope we are all coping with the weather.

I have been asked to fit a supply to a Garage on a tt supply when I looked to see if there was a spare way in the CU I noticed that it was a Volex with 100A main switch and 63A 30mA rcd

However, the breakers are all labeled VB6, VB32, etc. Can someone tell me if the V in VB stands for Volex or Voltage

Also, if these are voltage breakers would I need to replace the CU?

As BRIAN157 says - standard Volex circuit breaker markings.

Hmm, trouble identifying standard MCB's. Spidey senses tingling......

Just making sure rather than making assumptions

ELCBs operate by voltage even if my nomenclature was less than perfect.

I will be the first to admit that I probably do not have the experience of Lurch.

However, if everyone knew everything there would be little point in this forum.

What I do know is that I would rather risk the embarrassment than not asking to make sure 100% what I was doing.

Maybe if Spidey tingles it's because he has superhuman powers; personally, I will always question the nature of the rope before I go swinging from tall buildings:|

PS For the more positive minded amongst us can someone tell me how to recognize ELCBs?Blushing

An ELCB is a big old brown thing that has live and neutral in and out and 2 earth connections. You will not find them fitted into a single DIN module of a recent CU. Not sure when ELCB's stopped being sold here, good 20-30 years ago at a guess.

Out of the hundreds I've seen\slung in the skip, I've only ever seen a couple that don;t look like this;

The other type are of a similar vintage, maybe slightly newer, but wider and green.

Is the house supply TT or just garage?
The house ,Batty, the garage has no supply as yet. Just been asked for a price.

While we are on the subject, I have read with great interest the various degrees of differing opinion on this forum - and a few others (guest viewing) about the dangers and solutions of exporting earth from PME supplies. and this raises two questions:

Firstly, can I export an earth on a TT system (short distance)?

Secondly, can a TT system with outbuilding be I spiked at both ends?

I think I know the answer (just making sure) ;)

Thanks Lurch !

You know I think you and I could get along really well;) :)

OTTOMH I can;t recall seeing one in a CU. If there is one in a CU it will be an ageing CU, not a recent modular type.

Be careful on pricing this job if they have a standard split load cu on TT supply that is not right. Unless the external ze is unusually low which generally it will not be on TT you may come up against all sorts of problems. It makes me wonder who installed the cu.
