Whilst re-wiring a refurb project in a council owned and occupied building we had to work out what the crack was with the original fire alarm panel. This is what we found on removing the cover. It looks original from the 60s era and works using relays. It looks to of been bodged over the years and it had a service contract in place with a large national company whose name consists of 3 letters the first being A.

What a sham.

The system was replace as part of the contract.

Surprising it worked very well with weekly function tests taking place.

 
Very common throughout the 1960's relays work very well, and there was no real alternatives to on site custom alarm panels. Which is why many were made by cabinet makers as part of the furniture.

Interestingly early fire warning which precedents fire detection dates way back to the 1880's
