My partner asked me to have a look at her GHD hair straightners this morning as they kept cutting out when she was using them. So with my morning cuppa:coffee and tv on i sat on the sofa to have a look.

First i switched them on and wiggled the cord and sure enough, the power inicator flickered. so thought i'd take the cord out and check it was a break in the cable and not a bad connection inside the straightners.

Here's what the replacement cable looks like,

As you can see from the picture, the end is a wee plug in bit which allows the cable to swivel without getting tangled. I felt the end to see if it was rough from any arcing. Wet Fish

SAFE ISOLATION??????

It was still plugged in. Got 2 wee blisters on my finger. Lucky thats all.

That was a wake up call not to be so laxed just because im in the house wi the tv on and sippin my cuppa.

Am I understanding this.

The cable PLUGS IN with a plug that has live contacts that you can touch?

That does not sound very safe?

LOL i know i should not laugh could have been a lot worse but i can't help it just like when someone stubs thier toe;)

you need a screw driver to remove cover to get access to the connection.

personally, i cant see any problem with the design. just the person who forgot to unplug before taking it apart!

I totally agree andy, the point i was trying to emphisize was in the comfort of my own home i wasn't paying attention like i would in my working environment. When elictricity is involved you cant afford to be lazy, but we all make mistookes some times. :^O

I unscrewed the cover at the end and pulled the connector out, cant be done without unscrewing. It was just me not being very safe and not unplugging the damn thing.

i think we have all had tha moment of taking stuff apart without isolating... fortunately, ive always noticed before ive touched something (slight paranoia, but it stops me touching anything before my tester has)

was this when you took your avatar picture? :D
Ha, felt like it could have been, More a fright than anything else. That reminds me, i never picked up my screwdriver from behind the chair when i threw it in the air. :^O

I DO have an issue with an item (replacement cable) than could be plugged in before the other end was connected. We all know that`s stoopid, but does joe bloggs?
So do I.

It could so easily have been designed with a SOCKET in the end of the cable, and the plug part in the appliance. That would give the same swivel function, but much much safer.

What if the appliance is dropped and the end part holding the cable in breaks? the live plug could then unplug and be touched.

I am very very NOT impressed by the "design" of this appliance.

This is the sort of thing that would have been designed out in the old days if the appliance had sought BEAB approval,

you could push a plug into the socket without the back screwed on, you could damage any domestic appliance and expose live parts.

No Rcd then :Blushing
The circut is rcd protected, i wondered why it didnt trip either at first but realised that i touched both live and neutral. So in effect my finger became the load for a split second, there was no fault to earth so rcd wont trip and no overload fault either cos 3A plugtop fuse was still healthy too. :)
