Makes me laugh electricians knocking unions. If it were not for unions there would be no such thing as the JIB for a start off. There would be no minimum wage, and all of you that are self employed would be competing against all the "no-Quals" eastern european types, as you are now discovering to your cost.....

It would be [and is now getting] to be just one big race for the bottom...

^^^And the unions would solve this how?^^^^

Are you or have you ever been a paid up card carrying union member?

I used to be the senior union rep at a former 'blue chip' employer. No union takes staff out on strike without very good reasons. Most of the work though, isn't about money but H&S standards and supporting workers against poor managers. As a union rep I was also constantly fighting to make the company better - it's the best way of keeping jobs, and gaining pay rises for all.

As for the video, this is true of many industries, water, gas, electric to name but a few. In theory by selling off our assets we get investment from abroad, but as services are just constantly getting worse in the name of making profits for shareholders, this is obviously a failed idea.

Like Binky I was a union convenor within a blue chip company. We got close to a strike once in the 23 years I was there. Common sense prevailed and we negotiated a solution to the problem.

That was the EETPU, Unison seem a very poor replacement.

You talk like there being no JIB would be a bad thing....

Hi Jono,

I thought the JIB was the people that set the "going rate" as it were for what electricains earn, Surely if it were not for them you would all be on the minimum wage competing against illegal immigrants that work for nothing.. I know it is different for people like Paul as trhe muppest would not get a look in at that kind of stuff, but for an ordinary everyday electrician, i thought the JIB would be just what is wanted??? Dunno, i am not an electrician!!

john..

The job rates only really apply to employed sparks for the self employed they are well below par ime ?? Therefore they can actually damage the self employed in some ways.

where would we be without the JIB ?

I don't think their policies cover ALL employed sparks, I just see them as another NIC.  join our club, obey our made up rules and you will get..... :C

Unison: Another scam, they are refusing to represent us in an upcoming TUPE transfer despite everyone being paid up members they aren't interested as it doesn't involve any glory just representing employees who are unsure about their rights.

:(

Ah well, That would be because of the demise of the unions....

IF, they had had a bit more support, not only would you be getting the proper rates, but you would not be competing against unqualified numpties either. Not qualified would = no job as an electrician [etc]

When i was a kid in hospital, i offered to change a light bulb. I was told i could not as the entire place would go on strike and only electricians could change light bulbs..

Can anyone claim the NHS is better now than then???? I think not...

john..

The JIB was only for electricians employed by contracting companies. As an industrial electricians employed by a blue chip company the JIB was of no interest to us. We fought our own corner over pay claims. The only time we needed the EETPU was in matters regarding employment law and that didn’t happen very often.

The EETPU went off course with the amalgamation with the AEU. At that point I had a monumental argument with Eric Hammond and resigned my union membership. Unison are just insurance salesmen.
