I ask because I yesterday I looked at Yamaha Guitars on Amazon .

Just looked in on Facebook to see what part of the world my erstwhile  niece is in at the moment   and  guess what the adverts are  on Facebook ....Yamaha Guitars .

What is the link between Facebook & Amazon?

Google.

Google advertise your browsing habits on other people's sites, though Amazon and facebook are rivals and also advertisers google are the biggest and most prolific.

If you click on the triangle in the top right corner you can change your ad preferences.

To summon this advert I googled ITS reciprocating saws.

Still stranger, (to me at least), my wife and I sometimes see 'ads for things the other has browsed. We use separate laptops, though on the same router and account. How does that work? Location perhaps?

Lots of ways they can track you,  ip address, cookies, browsing history, feedback from other sites such as facebook and youtube.

I get ad's for topshop on my phone even though I've never visited their site, though Mrs Duck has on her iPhone.

We both use Google chrome so the data is obviously collated.

A weird thing... If you have a new device and visit say a car forum you will get ad's that they assume other forum users are interested in, over 40s dating sites are pretty common.

I was watching a programme about this a little while ago, they collect data on things you have 'liked', searched for etc etc and apply psychological profiling techniques to then direct advertising at you. EG Facebook will often input 'suggested posts'. I used to click on these and say 'not interested' in the hope they would send less ads. In reality all I was doing was providing feedback that they could use to target me more accurately with different ads. So I've stopped doing this now - keeps the buggers guessing. It's exactly the same with things like Supermarket loyalty cards, so I don't have any of those either. The less they know, the more chance they will make mistakes and the more chance of getting a genuine bargain is my view of it.

In short, much of your on-line life is being closely watched - very big brotherish!
