Ive just finished my 2330 L2 and have been consistant with a credit all the way through but now Im at a crossroads as to where to go from here.

I work with a couple of mates on the London Underground as an electricians mate and the plan was to all do our 2330 level 3 and become 'real' electricians.

The problem is, they are both now going to do their 2392 and 2382 (17th Ed and testing and inspection). Our other mate, who works sites during the day was also going to do the 2330 L3 if I did it.

Ive spoken to him and he doesnt want to go the same route as the other two. he wants to consentrate on becoming an approved electrician.

My question is,...Whats the best way to do this?

I also want to become an approved electrician but am not sure if I should do the L3 first then the other courses or do it the other way round.

We are both doing a PAT course this summer to add to our belt.

Any advice is welcome!

Hi Mate.

I have just finished the 2330 level2.

(actually - I lied - we have the last two units to do in our year 2 level 3).

I have to re-enrol on for the level 3 - starting on September the 1st.

From Septembr to December, we will be finishing the level 2 units. From December - June '09, we will be doing 2330 Level 3.

I have just done and passed the 2382-10. (17th Edition). on a 10 week course as I didn't have a 16th Edition beforehand (2381).

I was going to the 2382-10, But I have been having bad feedback about it. I am led to believe that I would be better off doing the full 2391. (they have changed their minds abouts changing the 2391 as it is such a well known, worldwide Qual Number).

So do you think I should stick with the 2330 L3 and become an approved electrician?

We can take the 17th Ed as a night course if its so short and then anything else once the yr is up.

So next summer Id have 2330 L3 (approved), PAT and 17th Ed.

What area do you want to specialise in MrSkipsey?

Personally - I am going to specialise in Domestic - to start.

I am doing the 2330 levels 2 & 3, I have the 2382-10 (17th Ed)

I was going to do the "Part P" as well, but I don't know about that (we don't really need it).

And finally - I am hoping to do the 2391. (No rush for that yet though).

Im working on the London Underground at the moment and that will always be my bread and butter untill TFL's billions runs out.

However I am also set up as a limited company so one day the plan is for me and my mate (the one who works on site during the day) to go into business together and tender for contracts aswel as domestic work. Bit of everything really.

Cheers ABC. Is it possible to do both at the same time or is that too much hassle?

Can any of you guys clear this up. My mate whose not doing L3 thinks that L2 makes you an electrician. My other mate on days reckons that the L2 only makes you a mate and is the equivilent to his 2360 or something?

It is possible yes, I guess it is down to you at the end of the day mate, you sound well clued up so you might be able to handle the extra theory.

Not trying to put you off, just ask yourself if you think you can handle the extra work involved. Talk to Mr Admin he has done these recently I do believe.

Good luck to you mate.

My only concern with the 2330 L3 is that Ive been told I have to be working in the industry to pass.

Now, although I work on the Underground it isnt really a case of 1st and 2nd fixes. Granted we run alot of cable in supertube using boxes couplers but most of our stuff is OPO related. Installing CCTV, track to train systems etc etc.

How am Igoing to pass L3 if Im not installing ring mains or 2 way lighting? Also,...Is there anyone within the board that examines you who has the relavent passes to get onto the underground? I have to renew mine yearly and you cant get on a station during engineering hours without your entry permit!

Im so confused as to what to do.

As far as I am aware you have to be working with a qualified electrician to do the 2330 (steps back to see if im wrong) However if you are working within TFL, can you not get placed with one for the duration of the 2330?

Just a thought.

You dont have to be in the industry for 2330 L3, but you do for the NVQ L3 (2356?)

I think for the NVQ you have to make up a portfolio of jobs, domestic, commerical, industrial. I believe you just have to do 2 out of the 3. So I would have thought you have the industrial part

Have a chat to your lectuerers at college, they should know more.

My lecturers are only interested in getting us signe dup at the moment and Im abit reluctant to do it just yet. I work with a couple of blokes who are all approved electricians and have been since they left school and did their aprrentership about 30 yrs ago. Could they not sign me off on any jobs?

Also,...Im having a conversation with my mate, and he said that his college has told him that the 2330 L3 is the new 2382 and that he can do the 2392 and 2382 for

Yep. Big time~! Hs college have told him he is now too late to enrola nd has to go on the waiting list. Pus they have put the cost up by

Spot on Mikey-c, Sir.

The 2330 is Not the 2382 - They are two completely different courses, Mate.

I have sat the 2382-10 (The full 17th Edition Course - There is the 2381-20 for those that already hold the 2381 1th edition qual - within a certain timeframe).

And the 2330 has replaced the 2360 (236 to the old hands on here). :)
