I had 3 megger MFTs go bang on me in the past.

I have used a lot of meters in the past, from metrel, kewtech etc through robin, fluke, megger to seaward etc,

and virtually every short course guy I have ever met has used megger 'cos thats what we were taught with' and 'the tutor got us a good deal on them' ,

so, they werent taught to use a meter, they were simply taught to repeat tests, thats how I see it anyway,

anyway, whats the sweeping statement you think I have made?

What percentage of short course guys own a megger and who collected the data?

How many of them bought the meter off their tutor?

Tutors earning commission? So the tutor is buying the meters cheaper than the students can on the internet and making a profit?

I know a couple of short course guys who bought flukes as that what they were taught with, doesnt mean I will say they all did.

Hi all,

Well, i have got a Megger 1730 and love it. So what is the best?? Megger, Fluke, or what??

It all comes down to personal preference, after that they are all the same i think. A ford, is not that much different to a vauxhall, some prefer one, some the other. I have got all Megger stuff, and i love it, but then, that is with the exception of my phase rotation meter, and that is Fluke, and i love that big style.

What is best, whatever suits YOU and YOUR personal preferences. You might as well ask who is best, Kate Moss or the dark haired ex barmaid one on coronation street, cannot remember her name. Both would be good in the right hands!!! [Mine preferably!!!!!!!!!!!]

Most of my personal test equipment is Kyoritsu. I like it although it doesn't seem a very popular choice reading the previous posts. We have a couple of Fluke ammeters in our workshop, they're okay but I don't particularly think they're anything to write home about.

My Fluke 1653b was connected across 3 phases on Sunday evening, Red-L1, Green-L2, Blue-L3,m checking phase rotation at a machine, and, all was & is still fine. So, sorry batty, not quite correct
1652'S don't do phase rotation although mine is over 5 years old so possibly the newer ones do. I was just saying as I know KME had a bad experience testing 440 volts with his Fluke.

Go with what you like, which does everything you want it to and within your price range.

If you don't need stuff like bluetooth, memory, beeps and buzzers why pay extra.

Well, my 1653 & 1653B both do phase rotation! ;)

Having spoken direct to Fluke about this, the 1652 is also designed to take 3 phases across the 3 leads.

I believe the incident with KME's unit was a one off.

My Megger 1730 does phase rotation too, as does my megger voltage probe!! But i would rather use my proper fluke rotation tester as you can use it to identify terminals on a motor too! Simply connect the leads to the motor, turn the motor by hand in the direction you want it to go, and it will identify the connections for you! No more experimenting!! Say you have a motor running, but you do not know which way it is turning, say the drive end is covered up, or it drives a pump or something. Simply rest the tester on the motor casing, and it will tell you which way the motor is going!! Yep; love it i do!!
