I saw it mentioned on the tv. It's because people don't regularly clean out the lint filter, so the lint eventually gets onto the heater and catches fire.

If the filter was cleaned eveery cycle, it wouldn't happen.

Definitely a case of the machine not being sufficiently idiot proof rather than fundimentally dangerous.

My daughter in law has one of those subject to the recall,fortunately it's in the shed,however she's been told it will be months before they are able to fix it,apparently the connections to the heating element are uninsulated and lint builds up on these and then catches fire.Any drier whether the filters are cleaned regularly or not will get some lint in the back,it's a fact of life,lint is unbelievable flammable,When I had my laundrette we had a fire once in the vent ducts caused by a buildup of lint,very nasty stuff.
