why are coils marked U,V, W.

I was just wondering why the coils on a 3phase motor are often marked as U,V and W? Does anyone know where this originated from, just seems an odd choice of letters? headbang

They are the international std. letters for the 3 phase terminals for current consuming devices.

Ok, I get that its a standard thing, I just thought there might be a reason! ABC, I get that makes some sense, or XYZ could work but why UVW. Anyway its not important. thanks guys!
