why are coils marked U,V, W.

I was just wondering why the coils on a 3phase motor are often marked as U,V and W? Does anyone know where this originated from, just seems an odd choice of letters? headbang

Ok, I get that its a standard thing, I just thought there might be a reason! ABC, I get that makes some sense, or XYZ could work but why UVW. Anyway its not important. thanks guys!
