... Admin 2 has been to the "Orange" mobile network Shop and enquired about the internet on her Blackberry.

He stated that she needs "Wifi".

How the heck does that work? What do I need to buy? How to secure it (Have just read a little on the "search" for Wifi on here. How much does it cost?

We currently have a BT Voyager 210 ADSL Router.

Give me all the details, in N00b talk, Please. :p

Many Thanks,

Admin.

PS. How the heck can her phone use our "Wifi" when she is out and about places?

She can pick any WIFI signal up as long as it is not a secured network, eg local pubs/hotels which advertise free WIFI etc.

Check also with Orange as I'm with T-Mobile and I use their network if can't get a WIFI signal

If you've already got wireless Internet indoors the blackberry can connect to that and use Internet for free. If it the same as the iPhone. If not you have to connect to the net using the providers Internet connection ie 3g. So if you've got wireless indoors for Internet it's free. Hth

Have't got a wireless router at home, as I thought they were easy to use by other people.

I am sure you guys wouldn't explaining how I can secure it, when I get one, won't you, guys? :)

Easiest way would have been to get one off your ISP as they tend to come pre configured with random wpa2 keys and they take a bit of brute forcing to break.

WiFi comments

WEP is about as secure as a string vest holding a swarm of bees,

encryption has been cracked, using brute force methods, it can be compromised in under 10mins

WPA not much better than above but takes longer to crack the key

WPA2-PSK use this level of encryption, will thwart all but the serious determined attack (e.g. days not hours) in other words the likely reward will not justify the length of attack

The biggest issue with WiFi is in Hot Spots, BTOpenZone etc, these are in most cases incorrectly configured and insecure, as such wide open to hacking. I'd never log into any Online bank account, and never access web email accounts while on an Open WiFi. It's relatively easy for hackers on the same Hot Spot to farm user names and passwords, so next time your in Starbucks stick to web surfing.

It amazes me how many home WiFi's are open, as I sit and type this, of the 8 I can see, 3 are open, 2x have WEP, 1x WPA. I have mentioned to my neighbours but they don't seem to either understand or care :red card

try googling backtrack3

will crack anything in 24hours if set up correctly,

UNLESS you hide your network and traffic,

then it can take up to 7 days or more, which isnt a problem if you just change your password every week, no compromise.

wifi is so unsafe its scary, I was once at a persons house where within 2 hours they had picked up and cracked over ten of 30 odd available networks and were able to get on screen what the other PC had on screen, user names, passwords etc, basically whatever you had on screen was on that screen as well,

unhidden WEP is like giving out your PIN number,

Pop round my home or work and you'll be there years and get nowhere :Applaud ---------- AUTO MERGE Post added at 22:19 ---------- Previous post was at 22:17 ----------

What blackberry has she got ?

They are inherently secure if set up correctly ( the FBI use them )
Can't be that secure they stopped Obama from using one.

Admin,

This sounds good^ but you'll have to unhide the wifi first probably if you can remember how ;)

I could not find these menu's mind it was the first time I had ever held a Blackberry device!

Canoe,

His wifi is already hidden so he will have to unhide it for the 'Berry to find it or type in the SSID in full if that can be done on a 'berry.

I don't know my way around 'berry menu's that's why I could not find the settings before I hid the wifi for them.

He already has the wifi set up at home for the WII etc., hidden & secured, though I can't remember which protocol we used it does also have MAC locking enabled.

You mean fixing the ip to the mac, or setting the time out to a very long time or indefinite?

Please remember Admin is not a networking wizard, red hot on html & websites but not physical networking stuff!

he should know the ssid as IIRC we set it to something he would remember.

I don't get a blocked MAC list in my Belkin N1, well not as I can find!

Mind I could not find the right menu on the 'berry either!!!

How true that is Sidewinder. :_|

You are due another visit soon, aren't you? ;)

Thank You, Canoe - I appreciate all your help. :Applaud

I get a llist of connected MAC's & have the MAC locking option but could not find the binding option.

I have thought about static ip's as i don't have that many machines to manage, though if I enable the dhcp and a guest machine is allowed on it may steal one of the fixed mac's.

I do allow the kids friends to connect sometimes which is why dhcp is useful mind I do the settings on their machines then delete the mac's on the router when they are gone, useful for sleepovers!

Just thought I could set the "normal" access machines to fixed ip then start the dhcp pool above this.
