Interesting comment about the lithium and no mains power. How long do the batteries last and will labc accept this as they normally ask for mains powered!

How long do the batteries last

10 years on the Aico units, which is the life of the detector itself so after 10 years you just remove the entire unit and replace it, as you should with mains powered ones anyway.

will labc accept this as they normally ask for mains powered!

Depends who you ask! Technically a grade D system (which is called for in approved document B1) specifies mains powered devices, the battery only detectors will comply with grade F (probably slightly better than most as the unit is sealed so you can't remove the battery to disable protection as per most grade F compliant units and it is interlinked). However, as the 10 year lithium based detector is designed to be sealed and last for the life of the detector it offers no less protection and is probably a better fit for domestic properties as it doesn't rely on the mains and so doesn't get ripped off the ceiling in anger when the power is off or the backup battery is low.

I was under the impression that was only if the units were mains powered ......

How do you mean?

The battery only Aico units have a sealed lithium battery which will power the detector for 10 years.
