Hello

I wish to wire a Ventaxia ceiling mounted extractor fan into my utility room. I want to power it from a spur off a power socket and manually switch the unit on and off at the wall.

Is it correct to place a fused spur off a plug socket and then downstream from the fused spur insert a 3 pole isolation switch, then downstream from this wire direct to the extractor. I would use the isolation switch as a manual on and off. There is a pull cord on the unit but I would prefer not to use this.

I'm not sure whether the fused spur needs to be between the isolation and source socket or after the isolation. I assume I need a fused spur rather to put a fuse inline before the appliance (and that just having an isolation switch is not acceptable).

Also, is it correct to use the isolation switch as a day to day switch.

Thank you for your help

You can use a switched fused spur, this will cover the fusing down and isolation (assuming it is within the appropriate distances etc) and should be before the switch usually.

No need for a fan isolator for daily operation specifically, just a standard 1 gang light switch would be fine if the spur is local to the fan (i.e. in the utility room). If the spur is not in a position that is appropriate for the isolation then you can use a fan isolator as you suggest, or any double pole switch as the daily switch which would double as the isolator.

Thanks for your reply Lurch. Are you saying that I can use the fused spur as a fuse and isolator? I thought that all three cables needed disconnection for an extractor for maintenance therefore the need for a three pole isolator. All the sockets will be in the same room. Thanks again.

A 3 pole fan isolator is generally for a bathroom fan or one with a run on timer function so you can isolate the permanent live, switched live and neutral. You only have permanent live and neutral, there is no third wire to isolate.

Great thanks Lurch you have been a great help. I knew there was something about 3 pole isolation and extractors just only for run on timers and switched live which isn't relevant for me. Cheers
