I passed my 302/303 course that July, going back in Jan to do my 17th edition ( modified )

A customer wants to put lighting & sockets in her shed.

Her main C.U. in house is NOT split. Can i run a 2.5mm SWA cable in trunking or conduit as she does not want her garden slabs lifting. This will run on the bottom of her fence approx 15m long, to a 2 way C.U. in shed ???

gr8ful for advice :)

no where near enough details

for a start:

whats the earthing type?

is there enough capacity for the additional load?

whats the design current of the shed?

are you part p reg'd? how do you plan on notifying this?

Hey there,

its TNC-S

( not checked load of house or shed ) job required to be done in March so getting as much info as possible.

We will be doing 17th in January & join NAPPIT.

I am just aquiring info and experience.

ALL info is gr8ly appreiciated - thx.

Welcome to the forum. Once again I am sorry to say these sort of questions do make me think that the C&G's have been considerably dumbed down. Do they not cover circuit design any more. Whatever happened to load currents, design currents, overload protection device, cable installation methods, capacities, volt drops etc. Didn't these sort of question used to be classroom excesses. A small workshop 20m from a house requires a supply for so many amps. Why would you want to put SWA inside conduit? If you have not checked the load for the shed it is no use talking about cable sizes yet. You need to go and talk more with the customer. Also checking for extraneous parts in the shed so you can decide how you are going to approach your earthing. e.g. do you intend to use 2core + a rod or 3core & exporting the earth? Have you been to site yet or is it just a telephone conversation? are you intending to use the job as a sample for assessment? It can often be helpful to run cables down gardens during the winter before all the plant life starts growing back up making access difficult. But not when the weather is very cold as the cable becomes unmanageable.

Sheds going to have to be tt'd. I wouldn't be exporting the tncs earth outside the equipotential zone. You'll need to assess the current load on the board before adding however don't think a couple of sockets and light in the shed will be alot of loading but you'll need to check what's the maximum loading that will be used then size the cable to the load. What board is there existing. One 30mA rcd covering whole board ? Any spare ways before the rcd?
