on a job to fit a new bathroom light I discovered that the exsiting wiring was only just long enough to terminate at the lamp. I had to lift floor board in the loft to extend the circuit for the new lamp.

I was wondering how many of you allow a little bit of extra cable when wiring a circuit for future work? I know that i do. :)

on re-wires etc i normally terminate cable into the light fitting whilst its about 0.5mtr from ceiling, then push slack into ceiling and screw up. so loads of slack. only wire it tight when i cant push any cable back up (like flats with conduit wiring)

Yes always try to leave some spare, but not blooming half a metre, blimey Andy !! :| No wonder you keep having volt-drop problems!!
i like to wire light fittings at chest height (when standing on a work platform/steps). no point making it harder to wire when its on the ceiling.

although them rolls of 1.5 would probably last a few jobs longer if i didnt leave so much...

And what do you mean volt drop problems?! 180V at the light is more than enough!

I always leave a little bit spare and tuck it into the wall/ceiling if theres room! If theres not enough room thats when i get a little agitated. (A little!! ; ))

It winds me up when you undo a socket and it pulls forward about 1/4 inch only, knuckles scraping on the wall to undo it X(
